Rick & Morty Live-Action Teaser Almost Included Daniel Radcliffe

Warner Bros' Senior Vice President of Anime and Action Series, Jason DeMarco, has revealed that Daniel Radcliffe was almost involved in the live-action Rick and Morty teaser that was released yesterday. The 14-second Rick and Morty teaser was released ahead of the final two episodes of season 5 releasing on September 5, and sees Christopher Lloyd and Jaeden Martell step-out of a green portal as the C-132 versions of the eponymous duo. The teaser excited the internet and sent fans of the show into a spin wondering whether the teaser was simply marketing or a hint of a future live-action episode.

Created in 2013 by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, Rick and Morty follows mad-scientist Rick Sanchez (voiced by Roiland) who returns to live with his daughter Beth and her family after many years away. He drags his socially awkward teenage-grandson Morty (also Roiland) on a number of mad-cap adventures across space and various dimensions. The show quickly gained a huge following upon its release and also won two Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program. Rick and Morty's popularity only increased after the conclusion of its third season and the creators signed a long-term partnership with Adult Swim for 70 episodes across an unnumbered amount of seasons.

Posting on his Twitter account, DeMarco discussed the live-action teaser and congratulated the creative team behind the project. He also shared his excitement about recruiting the legendary Lloyd to take part. Most interestingly, DeMarco also revealed that he originally wanted former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe to play Morty in the teaser because "he’s a huge fan" of the show. He added that Radcliffe "(wisely) turned us down" and reflected that "It was an idea that sounded good on paper but wouldn’t have worked at all." Check out DeMarco's full tweet below:

Lloyd's involvement in the teaser makes perfect sense, especially as it was his iconic character Doc Brown from Back to the Future which served as inspiration for Rick - Roiland had previously created an animated short titled The Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti that parodied the film series. However, Radcliffe's involvement perhaps makes less sense. While it would certainly be fun to see him in the role, and it would be great to honor a devoted fan of the show, the 32-year old Radcliffe is arguably too old to play 13-year old Morty. Martell is a much better fit for the role, being only 18 and having a wealth of experience playing socially awkward teenagers such as his character Jacob Thrombey in Knives Out and the young Bill Denbrough in It.

It's good that DeMarco acknowledges that having Radcliffe involved was an idea that sounded better on paper, though. The short nature of the live action teaser means that it's an incredibly tight production with its elements fitting together perfectly, especially Martell and Lloyd. Fans have long hoped for a live-action version of Rick and Morty, and the teaser went a ways towards delivering that. It's hard to imagine what the teaser would have been like if Radcliffe had been involved, but it may not have had the same impact. Still, it would surely have remained a fun teaser for the two-part season finale of Rick and Morty either way.
