Mortal Kombat: Battle Of The Realms Ending Explained

Here are the details of how the new Warner Bros. animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms ended, along with what it all means. Not to be confused with the 2021 live-action Mortal Kombat film, Battle of the Realms is the follow-up to Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge. While the animated Mortal Kombat Legends movies take some liberties with the source material in new and interesting ways, the overall story is mostly loyal to established Mortal Kombat lore.

After the events in Scorpion’s Revenge, Scorpion ends up in the Netherrealm and is revealed to be the key to unlocking the One Being, who has the power to merge and erase all the realms. Although Scorpion easily escapes Netherrealm, he is inevitably embroiled in the plans of fallen Elder God Shinnok to release the One Being. Meanwhile, Outworld’s invasion of Earthrealm gets sidelined when a stalemate forces Lord Raiden to agree with Emperor Shao Khan’s proposal to petition the Elder Gods for one final Mortal Kombat tournament, which will decide the fate of the realms once and for all. This sets up some of the classic in-tournament Mortal Kombat fatalities that have made the franchise beloved among fans of ultra-violence. During the tournament, several characters fall victim to these fatalities, including the bug queen D’Vorah, Curtis Stryker, Kung Lao, and even Raiden.

In the end, Liu Kang kills Shao Khan in what is the most epic fatality in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms. However, the Elder Gods then reveal that the One Being has been released and that the realms are already merging – the first steps in the destruction of everything. They imbue Liu Kang with the power to fight the One Being, which allows him to turn into a giant dragon and results in an epic kaiju battle. Liu Kang defeats the One Being and stops the merging of the realms, and Kitana takes her rightful place as the heir to Outworld’s throne. And although Raiden died in Mortal Kombat against Shao Khan earlier, the lightning bolts that flash over the Outworld coliseum during the last scene suggest that although his mortal form is gone, the Elder Gods might have restored his godhood. While many of Earthrealm’s defenders fell throughout the movie, it would seem that the fighting is over and that peace reigns over the realms – at least for now.

During the prologue, it’s revealed that Liu Kang’s destiny is to fight in Mortal Kombat and emerge as the tournament’s winner. This is why Tarkatan warriors were sent by Outworld to kill him as a baby, a plan that was foiled by Raiden in the prologue. Liu Kang’s destiny is also why he never hesitates to attack Shao Khan at any given opportunity throughout the movie. As Liu Kang defeats Shao Khan in the end, his destiny is fulfilled in 2021's best MK movie, Battle of the Realms. However, fate has even bigger plans for the tournament champion.

Alongside the events of the Mortal Kombat tournament, the Elder God Shinnok orchestrates his plans to unlock the One Being, for which Scorpion is the key. Shinnok allows Scorpion to escape the Netherrealm and enter Earthrealm to find and exact revenge on Sub-Zero, which he believes to be responsible for the deaths of his family and his entire Shirai Ryu clan. In reality, Shinnok is the one responsible and even crafted an illusion to fool Scorpion into believing that it was Sub-Zero. Meanwhile, Sub-Zero and Smoke rebel against the Lin Kuei clan when they witness their master turn their peers – Cyrax and Sektor – into inhuman cybernetically-enhanced warriors designed to hunt Scorpion. Only Sub-Zero escapes, leaving Smoke to be captured by Cyrax and Sektor. In a twist on the classic Sub-Zero and Scorpion Mortal Kombat rivalry, it’s revealed that the Lin Kuei clan was working for Shinnok, and the two warriors work together to try and stop the release of the One Being. However, the Lin Kuei cyber warriors Cyrax, Sektor, and Smoke overpower Scorpion and Sub-Zero, allowing Shinnok to have everything he needs to unlock the One Being. Even when the Lin Kuei clan turns on Shinnok, it’s too late to stop the emergence of the One Being and the beginning of the merging of the realms.

As the tournament ends and the realms merge, Liu Kang, who has been imbued with the power of the Elder Gods, must go beyond the call of destiny and fight the One Being. Outworld’s Tarkatan warriors take this opportunity to wreak havoc on Earthrealm, forcing Mortal Kombat warriors Kitana, Jax, Sonya, and Johnny Cage to help save civilians from the chaos. Liu Kang’s classic dragon fatality makes an appearance during the final epic battle, as the warrior unleashes the full power of the Elder Gods to absorb and defeat the One Being, which puts an end to the merging of the realms and Shinnok’s plans. As the dust settles, Jax points out that although Shao Khan has been defeated, his body is nowhere to be found, prompting him to ask Liu Kang, “What happens when he or someone else gets the itch to takeover Earthrealm again?” Liu Kang responds, “Then we will be there to stop him, together.” Meanwhile, after Johnny Cage and Sonya managed to defeat the Tarkatan warrior Baraka together during the merging of the realms, they share a kiss on the tournament grounds. Although Sub-Zero and Scorpion survive, the former rivals are forced to awkwardly witness Johnny Cage finally getting a kiss from Sonya, as Kitana and Liu Kang hold hands and relish the peace that everyone has worked so hard for.

As the survivors vow to defend the realms from any future threat, a mystery figure looks on while and lightning strikes above the Outworld coliseum, hinting at Raiden’s revival. Although the defenders of Earthrealm seem to have saved the day during the final act of Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, the possibility of Raiden’s revival could also mean that either or both Shao Khan and Shinnok are still alive and plotting their revenge somewhere. This suggests that Battle of the Realms isn’t the last installment in 2021’s animated Mortal Kombat Legends movies.
