Earlier this morning, select Best Buy stores sold PS5 consoles in-store for the first time since launch; interestingly, one customer dressed up as Mario to pick up their new PlayStation device. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms have continuously proven difficult to purchase around the globe due to ongoing stock shortages and semiconductor manufacturers believe the supply constraints could persist until 2022 or 2023.
As such, those interested in owning one of the current-gen consoles must resort to diligently pursuing online purchasing options on retailer websites or relying on the reseller market. Best Buy, temporarily, added a new wrinkle to the equation today. A select number of shops allowed customers to queue outside their doors for a chance to buy a console at 7:30 AM local time. While the retailer didn't confirm its plans until yesterday evening, reports about the in-store restock circulated earlier this week. Thus, countless eager shoppers began lining up long before stores opened their front doors. And one PS5 buyer, in particular, has raised eyebrows online.
Numerous customers camped out for Best Buy's recent in-store PS5 restock, bringing cots, tents, and other seemingly essential items. Someone else went all-out, though, dressing up in Mario cosplay and catching the eye of fellow shoppers. But the get-up was no simple, Party City costume. Instead, the Best Buy customer in question wore a suit that can only be described as Mascot Mario. Someone snapped a shot of Mascot Mario at a register, new PS5 in hand and a mask covering their mouth. A trench coat and huge glasses were also adorned for good measure. It's an interesting choice of attire for a very early morning shopping trip. But the Mario get-up clearly brought good luck to this PlayStation fan. Not only did they finally secure a PS5, they also managed to make the rounds on Twitter - a win-win.
Despite the unceasing stock shortages, sales of Sony's newest console continue to soar. PS5 now counts as the fastest-selling PlayStation system, moving over 10 million units as of July. The hardware manufacturer estimates it will have sold 14.8 million PS5 consoles as the end of this fiscal year. And, apparently, they've secured the parts to meet said sales expectations.
