Dexter: The Meaning Behind Their Names Proves The Original Ending Was Better

Showtime’s Dexter would have had a much better series finale if the creators stuck to the original ending, especially when considering the real meaning behind Dexter and Debra Morgan’s names. Although Dexter’s original series ended in 2013, it is still highly regarded as an incredible show with one of the most hated series finales of all time. The 2021 season 9 reboot, Dexter: New Blood, is a chance to rectify where the original ending went wrong, but it never would have had to if Showtime had run with the creators’ original idea of killing Dexter in the season 8 finale.

Dexter season 8 finished with a highly ambiguous ending that fans didn’t believe was consistent with the progression of the series as a whole. In the finale, “Remember the Monsters,” Debra Morgan dies in a disappointingly bland fashion where Dexter pulls the plug on her life support after being shot by a serial killer rendered her brain dead. Dexter then discards her body in the ocean where he had disposed of his countless other victims. The series ends with Dexter Morgan faking his death by riding into Miami’s storm, abandoning his son Harrison and girlfriend Hannah while taking on a new identity as a lumberjack in Oregon.

Had Dexter Morgan actually died in the series finale as the creators anticipated, Dexter and Deb’s deaths would have made much more sense, falling in line with the meaning behind their names. Deb and Dexter Morgan come from the mathematical laws of De Morgan, which begin and end both of their names. Additionally, De Morgan’s laws, which state “not (A or B) = (not A) and (not B),” can be interpreted in more generalizable terms as one cannot exist without the other. This suggests Deb and Dexter can’t live without one another, meaning that if the show ended with Dexter also dying, the prophecy of their names would be fulfilled, providing more consistency with the overall story.

Throughout Dexter, the Morgans make a point of expressing how crucial they are to each others' sanity. Deb particularly struggles with keeping stable relationships, always falling back on Dexter as her dependable adoptive brother. Several times Deb tells him she would go crazy without him, which takes a turn in Dexter season 6 when Deb realizes she’s in love with Dexter. Even when Deb falls out of love with Dexter, she can’t help but not put him over others, exemplified by her killing LaGuerta to cover up for him. Although Dexter professes to not have feelings, he’s obviously genuinely attached to Deb and has sympathy for her pain. After Deb disappears for the first few episodes of Dexter season 8, he incessantly tracks her down because he realizes he also can’t function properly without her.

Even in a platonic fashion, it’s clear that Debra and Dexter Morgan have a bond that transcends the typical familial connection. If they both died in the finale because Dexter realized he couldn’t live without Deb, the ending would have had at least more consistency with the creators’ intentions. Over an eight-season arc of Dexter struggling with his dark passenger and how he has affected the lives of his loved ones, disappearing made no sense. He obviously couldn’t have gotten rid of his dark passenger, so if Dexter had ended with him dying after Deb, or even getting away with Harrison and Hannah, the series would have had a much more logical conclusion.
