D&D's Next Adventure References The Classic Dungeons & Dragons Cartoon

The upcoming The Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign for Dungeons & Dragons will feature references to the classic D&D cartoon series from the 1980s. The Dungeons & Dragons cartoon followed the adventures of six kids from the real world, who end up transported into the world of a D&D campaign and must find a portal back home.

The D&D cartoon debuted in 1983 and it ran for three seasons. The show didn't last for very long, but it became fondly remembered by those who experienced it during its initial run. The show was especially popular in Brazil, to the point where a car commercial was made in the country that gave the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon a proper ending. The commercial featured the kids returning home behind the wheel of a KWID Outsider, giving longtime fans some closure about the fate of the cast.

Fans have often wondered if a reboot or remake was on the cards for the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. The tabletop version of D&D had its best year of sales in 2020, while a new D&D movie is in development. The Dungeons & Dragons cartoon will at least be referenced in the tabletop game, as part of the upcoming The Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign.

The Wild Beyond the Witchlight starts with the players visiting the Witchlight Carnival, which has all kinds of rides and special attractions. The Dungeons & Dragons cartoon started with the kids being sent to the fantasy world through the Dungeons & Dragons ride, which was something shown in the intro of every episode. Screen Rant recently interviewed Chris Perkins, the Project Lead on The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, and he confirmed that the adventure will feature references to the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon.

Chris Perkins: Yes, there are multiple nods to the classic Dungeons & Dragons cartoon series in The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, including an Easter egg in the poster map.

It's great to see the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon referenced within the tabletop game. For many people who saw the cartoon, it was their main introduction to D&D and inspired them to pick up the game. There is still no word regarding a revival for the series, but it's not outside the realm of possibility. Wizards of the Coast is already working with Netflix on a Magic: The Gathering animated series and the streaming service would surely want a show with the Dungeons & Dragons name on it. The Dungeons & Dragons ride has been silent for a long time and the newfound popularity of the game might be enough to awaken it, so it can send another group of kids into a fantasy world.
