Avatar: The Last Airbender - Which Comics To Read First

The various graphic novels part of the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe cover topics that the show missed out on—some comic events taking place during the show's timeline, while others continue the story of Team Avatar as they help rebuild the world. Six graphic novels appear in trilogy form, including The Promise, The Search, The Rift, Smoke and Shadow, North and South, and Imbalance.

In addition, there are one-shots and minicomics that reveal newer aspects of beloved characters, such as Toph and Katara. While fans of the original show should be able to follow the comic storyline easily, it always helps to know the order in which to read them.

10 The Lost Adventures — Water, Earth & Fire

The Lost Adventures is a collection of events that are interspersed within the timeline of the three books. It includes various storylines, from hilarious ones like "Bee Calm" and "It's Only Natural" to the relatively complex narratives in "Relics" and "Divided We Fall."

This comic anthology maintains the lighthearted vibe of the show—the only things missing are the voices and the ethereal musical score that viewers have grown to love.

9 Katara And The Pirate's Silver

Katara and the Pirate's Silver observes the intrepid Waterbender in her element after being separated from Team Avatar and is set within the ambit of Book Two: Earth.

It reveals the intricate political network running through the Earth Kingdom, a precursor to the Fire Nation colonies that eventually turn into the United Republic of Nations (in The Legend of Korra). More importantly, however, Katara leads a group of pirates to fight the Fire Nation, all without Aang's help.

8 Team Avatar Tales

Team Avatar Tales incorporates both major and minor incidents occurring between episodes as well as after the series finale, all of which would make incredible animated shorts.

There are some truly unique perspectives in this anthology, such as Mai's problematic rebound relationship, Sokka's short-lived stint as a teacher, Ty Lee's decision to become a part of the Kyoshi Warriors, and an adventure-mystery involving bizarre pumpkin-eaters.

7 The Promise — Parts 1, 2 & 3

The Promise is the first trilogy of graphic novels to be set entirely after the Hundred Year War and Ozai's downfall. Zuko and Aang have their first conflict when the Fire Lord chooses to keep the Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom, rather than displacing families who have lived there for a century.

The pair eventually manages to find a political sweet spot through the Harmony Restoration Movement. In a slightly unexpected twist, Zuko actually meets his imprisoned father and asks for his guidance.

6 The Search — Parts 1, 2 & 3

Zuko is eager to find his mother, Ursa, once again—he strongly believes that she's still alive and refuses to consider any alternatives. Azula reenters the picture for the first time after her defeat, offering to help her brother (and Team Avatar) pinpoint Ursa's location.

In The Search, the gang goes on an adventure to the Forgetful Valley and beyond on the off chance that Zuko might finally get the closure he desperately needs. The graphic novel trilogy also reveals hitherto unknown snippets of Ursa's past.

5 Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy

Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy details the formation of the first generation of Metalbenders, taught to harness their hidden abilities by the creator herself. However, Toph soon gets bored when her protégés, Ho Tun, The Dark One, and Penga begin taking care of new arrivals.

Also, Sokka tries to help out by bringing in a band named Trustfully in Love, but it doesn't seem to help. An underground tournament, however, adds some much-needed flavor to Toph's mundane daily life.

4 The Rift — Parts 1, 2 & 3

The Rift trilogy begins with Avatar Yangchen's festival, a celebration that is contaminated by the discovery of a horribly polluting iron ore refinery. Katara and Sokka do some sleuthing while Aang interacts with his past self, learning about an ancient, vengeful spirit.

Toph and her Metalbending pupils assist the Avatar in fighting General Old Iron, although the story's ending is a lot more heartwarming and hopeful than how it begins.

3 Smoke And Shadow — Parts 1, 2 & 3

The Smoke and Shadow graphic novel trilogy describes an upheaval in the Fire Nation when the New Ozai Society rears its head. A mysterious group known as the Kemurikage appears, demanding that Zuko abdicate the throne or risk running afoul of a prophecy.

They further warn that the country would be destroyed if the Fire Lord doesn't obey their dictum. The Kemurikage begin abducting children from the Capital City as part of their scare tactics, which is when things get really interesting.

2 North And South — Parts 1, 2 & 3

North and South runs in parallel with Smoke and Shadow, covering Sokka and Katara's experiences in the revamped Southern Water Tribe. The original village is transformed into a metropolis by Malina, a Northern Water Tribe member, and led by Chief Hakoda.

Unfortunately, the proposed plans for unifying the two tribes are pitted against severe resistance—Katara needs to play to her strengths in order to broker harmony between the North and South poles.

1 Imbalance — Parts 1, 2 & 3

The Imbalance Trilogy focuses on Team Avatar's adventures in Cranefish town, now an industrial hub due to the establishment of the Earthen Fire Industries by Lao Beifong, Toph's dad.

Aang learns that the bender and non bender populations in the area have been at each other's throats for a while, forcing him to take action. The Avatar's decision, however, is split between Katara and Toph, each of whom wants him to opt for a different resolution.
