10 Unpopular Opinions About The Deadpool Movies, According To Reddit

The first Deadpool was a phenomenon in almost every way. Though it had a minuscule budget relative to the other X-Men movies, it broke records as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever at the time. Deadpool 2 did even better, as it played into more of the superhero cliches it was mocking while still being brilliantly satirical.

However, Ryan Reynolds’ charm clearly hasn’t pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes, as some Redditors think the series gets too much credit. Between criticizing Reynolds’ comedy timing, claiming there’s no artistic value, and denouncing it as the movie version of Family Guy, there are a lot of hot takes about the series.

10 Deadpool Isn’t Funny, He’s Annoying

Reddit user FlavStilicho argues that Deadpool is simply annoying, claiming that the “nonstop sarcastic meta-banter is unbearable.” But that’s the whole point of the character, as he assumes the role of the audience, poking holes at narratives just like a critic would.

Between the superhero landing joke, which was even copied in Black Widow, or constantly using Wolverine as the butt of the joke, Deadpool has audiences in stitches. There are tons of classic gags in Deadpool, and the character is full of iconic lines that will still be quoted decades from now.

9 It’s Just Torture Porn

In a long diatribe about how much they hate the first Deadpool movie, Hermanjnr believes that the movie is “torture porn.” But most people don’t choose to watch the Deadpool movies for the gore or brutality, but for the comedy and even the storylines.

On top of that, the detail of the violence in the first movie is fairly minimal, especially compared to its recent DCEU counterpart, The Suicide Squad. But it’d be unfair to call either of them torture porn, as they’re hardly the masochistic movies that Saw, Hostel, and others are.

8 Venom Is More Of A Hero Than Deadpool

Though the two characters barely have anything in common with each other besides the fact that they’re both anti-heroes and Venom had some comedy injected into it, Darth_Spectre_Lair compares the two. The problem the Redditor has with Deadpool is that his morals aren’t balanced enough for an anti-hero, claiming that “his morals lack the necessary substance.”

However, Venom literally bites off humans' heads, and though he’s yet to do it to any innocent civilians, he has certainly considered it. While Deadpool’s behavior is questionable at times, he only ever murders the bad guys.

7 Deadpool 2 Has No Artistic Value

Redditor MixedFeelingz thinks Deadpool 2 has no artistic value and doesn’t understand how “adults are entertained by that.” Deadpool is one of the least pretentious franchises there is, and not even the movie takes itself seriously, let alone the audiences.

But given that the series is essentially a satirical take on modern superhero movies and a commentary on the current movie landscape, it does have some artistic credit. If The Last Dictator is artistic, and if The Naked Gun is artistic, then Deadpool 2 is artistic. It’s also the highest-grossing X-Men movie ever, which has to count for something.

6 If The Humor Is Taken Away, There’s Nothing Interesting About Him

User Theuniquestusername doesn’t just think that Deadpool isn’t funny, but they go even further by arguing that nothing is interesting about the character if he’s stripped of his humor. The Redditor claims that the character is “shallow,” but there’s actually so much more to him than just the humor.

Wade’s task at hand is to get vengeance on the people who wronged him and to win back Vanessa. And if anything, the character uses humor as a coping mechanism when he has cancer and undergoes the experiment, which only makes Wade more compelling and three-dimensional.

5 Deadpool Shouldn’t Be In The MCU

As Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, which is now called 20th Century Studios, the merc with the mouth’s future is now in the hands of the mouse. Reddit user Einfart isn’t a fan of that, citing that the jokes “would be so off-color” and would cause too much confusion.

But it’s the logical next step, as Deadpool can’t just keep making jokes about Wolverine. The fact that Deadpool will join the MCU is one of the best rumors about phase 5. In fact, there’s almost too much material and ideas, as Deadpool will over 20+ movies worth of jokes to make, not to mention all the fly-on-the-wall commentaries.

4 It’s Childish And Immature

Redditor Superdudeo argues that “if you’re over 20 years of age and you like it, be ashamed,” as they call the movies childish and immature. Though the Redditor does have a point about the childish nature, and there are plenty of scenes where Deadpool cracks a stupid joke or makes a sexual innuendo, they don’t make a good argument.

On top of that, the series is full of scenes that fans can point to that are strokes of genius. There are smart moments in both Deadpool movies, such as the honest opening titles and Domino’s superpower simply being luck.

3 Deadpool 2 Is More Emotional Than Infinity War

Though Deadpool 2 is great and does have artistic value, Reddit user AdamCaveRoberts takes it a little too far by claiming it’s more emotional than Avengers: Infinity War.

The user doesn’t give much reason as to why except for stating “FACT,” but it could be pertaining to the fact that Cable was willing to sacrifice seeing his family in order to save Wade’s life. And while it is a surprisingly tender moment, nothing in either Deadpool movie holds a candle to watching the heroes die at the hands of Thanos's snap.

2 Ryan Reynolds Isn’t Funny In The Role

Claiming that they “don’t think comedy is his strong suit,” Redditor Longjumping_Remove86 thinks Ryan Reynolds isn’t the best fit for Deadpool. And while there’s an argument to be made that Ryan Reynolds has become predictable, as many of his movies feature the same gags, he is a perfect fit for Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds would probably listen to the Redditor's reasoning and even jokingly agree. The two Deadpool movies go to extreme lengths to make fun of Reynolds’ previous movies, and the actor is a good sport and takes it on the chin. In Deadpool, he makes fun of the green CGI suit his character wore in Green Lantern, and in Deadpool 2 the superhero even goes back in time to kill Ryan Reynolds before he makes X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And the thing is, all of that is what makes Reynolds so funny in the role, as so few actors are able to laugh at themselves.

1 It’s The Movie Equivalent Of Family Guy

Redditor Akaed makes the claim that the Deadpool series is the movie equivalent of Family Guy. The reason behind the hilarious claim is that the user thinks that Deadpool is “the epitome of try hard.”

There are a lot of times when the movies do feel forced, and not every joke lands, such as the “brown pants” joke from the first movie. But when a film is hurling so many jokes at the audience per minute, a couple of lead balloons here and there are forgivable.
