Obi-Wan Show's Filming Wrap Is Great For Star Wars Fans' 2022 Hopes

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series has reportedly finished filming, and that’s great news for Star Wars fans as there will be enough content for them to enjoy in 2022. The Star Wars universe continues to be one of the most extensive, popular, and profitable franchises in the entertainment industry, and even though the Skywalker saga is now over, it continues expanding in other media. Star Wars has been taking over the realm of TV/streaming in recent years, and these projects have turned out to be more successful than the sequel trilogy.

Star Wars ventured into the world of live-action TV series in 2019 with The Mandalorian, created by Jon Favreau and released on Disney+. Set after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, The Mandalorian follows the title character (played by Pedro Pascal), a lone bounty hunter who goes on the run after being hired to retrieve The Child/Grogu. The Mandalorian was a huge success, prompting Disney to continue developing more live-action Star Wars TV shows including two spinoff series from the Mandalorian timeline. Among those projects is Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will see the return of Ewan McGregor as the title character and Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will reportedly begin with the legendary Jedi master watching over Luke Skywalker on Tatooine, ten years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, which saw the fall of the Jedi Order and Anakin’s turn to the Dark side and rise as Sith lord Darth Vader. The project went through many ups and downs, as it started as a spin-off movie and was reworked as a limited series, but was put on hold for a while in 2020 as the people at Lucasfilm weren’t satisfied with the script. Obi-Wan Kenobi finally began filming in May 2021, and it reportedly wrapped in August 2021, which is great news for Star Wars fans as this means the series will make it to its projected release in 2022, so there won’t be a gap in Star Wars live-action content as they wait for the other biggest project in this universe: The Mandalorian season 3.

The Mandalorian season 1 premiered on Disney+ in November 2019 and season 2 arrived in October 2020, but season 3 doesn’t have a projected release date yet, though it's expected to start filming in September 2021. The next Star Wars live-action TV show in line is The Book of Boba Fett, set to be released in December 2021, which will be a nice continuation to The Mandalorian, and after that, fans will enjoy the series Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor in 2022. With Obi-Wan Kenobi now done filming and Andor still expected to wrap sometime in mid-2021 after facing many obstacles due to the coronavirus pandemic, the former is most likely to be released sometime in spring/summer 2022, with Andor arriving in late 2022. This will avoid leaving Star Wars fans with little content as they wait for The Mandalorian season 3, and it will be a nice journey to go from Boba Fett to Obi-Wan, two characters fans have been waiting to see in action again.

Obi-Wan Kenobi promises a lot of action and to answer some big questions left by the Skywalker saga about the title character, Darth Vader, and even Luke Skywalker, so it’s not surprising that it’s one of the most anticipated projects from Disney and Lucasfilm. Star Wars fans can rest assured knowing they won’t be left with no content as they wait for The Mandalorian season 3, and there will be some exciting stories coming in 2022.
