Marvel's Avengers Free Weekend Causes Player Spike | Screen Rant

Marvel’s Avengers has just gotten a big surge in new players thanks to the game's currently-underway free-to-play weekend. Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics are currently letting PC and PlayStation owners try out last year’s superhero team-based action RPG completely free of charge all weekend long, including Avengers’ multiplayer and DLC expansions.

It's no secret that Marvel’s Avengers has struggled to win over players since its troubled launch last August. While the game earned some praise for its storyline (which put the spotlight on the ever-popular Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel as she set out to gather the Avengers to save the world from A.I.M.), fans were less than thrilled with the game's reliance on microtransactions and shallow post-campaign content. Making matters worse was a glitch in a recent update patch that displayed the IP addresses of streamers for all of the internet to see, though Square Enix thankfully fixed this before too long.

According to TheGamer, curious players are starting to give Marvel’s Avengers a chance now that it is currently free-to-play. SteamDB's online user charts indicate a massive spike in users for Marvel’s Avengers since the free offer began a few days ago. While the game typically averages at about 500 or so players a day, the weekend has brought those numbers to upwards of 10,000 over the past 24 hours, with Twitch users peaking at over 2,000 on Friday. This can be seen in the high-resolution Steam chart for Marvel’s Avengers below:

Any players who wish to purchase Marvel’s Avengers after this weekend’s free trial period will retain all of their progress, which is welcome news given how long the main campaign is. Fans will be getting more Avengers action soon as well, since the new, Black-Panther-focused War For Wakanda DLC expansion is set to launch on August 17. Featuring God Of War's Christopher Judge as the voice of T’Challa himself, this additional campaign brings the Avengers to the titular African nation to help Black Panther protect both it and its legendary Vibranium supply from A.I.M and the mercenary Ulysses Klaw. Marvel’s Avengers: Black Panther - War For Wakanda will consist of roughly 25 hours of gameplay, making it the biggest expansion to come to Marvel’s Avengers to date.

In the meantime, it seems that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics' move to let players try out Marvel’s Avengers for free over the weekend has paid off, at least when it comes to getting people to check the game out after its lukewarm reception at launch. Only time will tell if the new players brought in by this weekend’s free-to-play trail will stay onboard, but if they do, Marvel’s Avengers could be on the road to redemption as the Black Panther focused War For Wakanda expansion releases in a few short weeks.
