Mark Hamill As Luke Skywalker In Mandalorian Season 2 Set Photos

Mark Hamill plays Luke Skywalker once again in newly released set photos from The Mandalorian season 2. When Disney announced it would continue its expansion of the Star Wars universe by creating live-action shows for its streaming service, there was both excitement and apprehension among the fan base. Luckily, the first of many planned shows, The Mandalorian, won over audiences immediately with its simple but compelling tale and deeper world-building. The series reached greater heights last year with the arrival of season 2, which featured numerous surprises.

The high point of The Mandalorian season 2 is perhaps the very end. After spending eight episodes trying to find a suitable Jedi mentor for young Grogu, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) comes face to face with none other than Luke Skywalker himself. Drawn by Grogu's power, Luke arrives just when it seems all hope is lost to save Din, Grogu, and their allies. As this wasn't revealed ahead of time, The Mandalorian's Luke surprise quickly became one of the biggest and best plot twists of the year.

The Mandalorian season 2 finale will get a behind the scenes special on Disney+ with the addition of a new episode of Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian. In a trailer for what's to come in August, Disney+ revealed a quick new shot of Hamill on set as Luke (via Skytalkers). There's also one of Grogu offering up a wave for audiences. Check out the set pictures down below.

Hamill had to be digitally de-aged to play Luke for The Mandalorian, and there were also moments that were shot with a stand-in. However, the actor made it clear that he was there on set for the scene, and as the above picture confirms, he even got to hold Grogu. The Disney Gallery episode will provide more behind the scenes info about how the Mandalorian season 2 finale came together, and there will likely be additional footage of Hamill on set. It can also reveal how CGI, stand-ins, and Hamill all contributed to Luke's final appearance in the episode, which should be fascinating to see.

Since fans thought Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the last time Hamill would play Luke in live-action form, his arrival on The Mandalorian spurred a great deal of excitement. Whether he could ever return remains to be seen, but as Grogu left with Luke at the end of the episode, it isn't out of the question. The latest episode of Disney Gallery will arrive later this month, on August 25, and provide new secrets about The Mandalorian and Hamill's triumphant return. Be sure to check it out.
