How Lost In Random Balances Board & Video Game Features

Lost in Random features a blend of tabletop gaming and classic video game adventures both mechanically and narratively, balancing an interesting mix of somewhat disparate elements. This certainly isn't the first video game to include aspects of board games like playing cards or rolling dice, but rarely are these features interwoven into the game's story and environment. From small details in the landscape to the deeper metaphor of battling the evil queen, Lost in Random finds a smooth blend between board games and video games in its presentation and gameplay.

The game takes place in the world of Random, a kingdom ruled by the evil queen. On the 12th birthday of every child, they must roll the one true dice to determine their fate. The queen arrives as sisters, Even and Odd, celebrate Odd's 12th birthday and she is forced to roll the dice.  Her fate is to live with the queen, leaving Even alone. Distraught, Even later discovers a sentient six-sided die named Dicey discarded in a landfill, and they set off on their adventure to rescue Odd.

The premise of Lost in Random is full of references to board games; most notably the roll of a six-sided die to decide someone's future. The protagonist and her sister are both named from the two definitive outcomes of any dice roll: Even and Odd. The world itself is named after the concept of random chance. These ideas set up the concept of Lost in Random's amalgamated world, but there is much more to see just below the surface.

Recent trailers for the game showcase different locations within the world of Random. One character remarks to Even "You're a long way from One Town," implying each of the six realms to explore will be numbered, aligning with the relevance of the six-sided die. There are several shots of Lost in Random in which viewers can see a number of board game items comprising the environment: dice, domino tiles, playing cards, and even a dice bowl. The very world Even explores incorporates common and recognizable pieces of tabletop games into the surrounding structures, from fences and walls to decorations.

But despite these themes, Lost in Random also wears its video game inspirations on its sleeve: Even can explore the environment in various ways, can break pots to find collectible currency, and can amass a library of useful cards by purchasing them from a vendor. She can then roll Dicey to select one of the aforementioned cards, which feature a wide variety of powers that often play into the more video game-oriented aspects of the title. These cards are named things like Exploding Dice or High Roller, often showcasing their own connection to tabletop gaming.

Lost in Random is not a video game that merely features board game aspects, but one that blends it into its core, allowing dice rolls and card-drawing mechanics to fuse with real-time combat and exploration.  The heart of Lost in Random's narrative seems to come from telling an emotional tale, but its mechanical elements, at least from what trailers have revealed so far, look to celebrate a host of gaming inspirations.
