Tom Clancy's XDefiant Early Beta Registration Open Now

The recently-announced multiplayer first-person shooter Tom Clancy's XDefiant from Ubisoft is opening up registration to the early beta to get feedback from players. XDefiant was a surprise announcement from developer Ubisoft, as most fans were expecting to see information about a new installment in either the Splinter Cell or The Division franchises. Instead, Ubisoft announced a brand new franchise that borrows content from their other existing IP.

Tom Clancy's XDefiant is a free-to-play, fast-paced, multiplayer shooter similar to Activision's Call of Duty series. However, XDefiant differs from Call of Duty in that the classes and operators in XDefiant are taken from existing factions in other Tom Clancy franchises. For example, the "Cleaners" faction comes from The Division, while the "Echelon" faction is borrowed from the Splinter Cell games. Each faction has its own unique playstyle, attributes, and abilities for players to choose from.

Although XDefiant was just announced, Ubisoft has already confirmed that registration for the game's open beta is already live. Eager players can begin registering to get a chance to enter the beta early. Players can register to join the beta on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The open beta will begin on August 5.

XDefiant is the latest of Ubisoft's announced free-to-play games. In May 2021, Ubisoft announced the next installment in The Division, to be called The Division: Heartland will be free to play. While Ubisoft is still committed to their AAA franchises such as Far Cry, the upcoming Star Wars game, and the recently-announced Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora game, it appears that Ubisoft is beginning to diversify and expand into more live-service and free-to-play titles. For instance, Ubisoft also recently made waves with the announcement that the next Assassin's Creed game, Assassin's Creed Infinity, will be a live-service game, departing from the franchise's usual single-player installments. It's unknown if Assassin's Creed Infinity will be free-to-play.

If nothing else, XDefiant should provide a welcome alternative to fans of first-person shooters looking to escape the current options of Call of Duty or the upcoming Battlefield 6XDefiant's marketing as a grungy, punk-style game takes away some of the uber-realism that those other shooters focus on. Ubisoft was also clear in the initial announcement that XDefiant is a shooter first, with a heavy emphasis on gunplay. This will undoubtedly be great news for those fans who are tired of the constant deluge of battle royale games or are just complaining about the buggy state of shooter games currently on the market.
