Star Wars: The Old Republic will soon mark ten years of existence, and the developers at BioWare have cooked up the Legacy of the Sith expansion to celebrate. Continuing on from their two classic Knights of the Old Republic RPGs, The Old Republic guides players through a multitude of different stories set decades before the movies that people know and love. Whether venturing the galaxy as a Jedi Consular or an Imperial Agent, there are plenty of adventures to be had in this free-to-play Star Wars Universe.
The Old Republic's last major expansion came in 2019 with Onslaught, and BioWare has been hard at work on several chapters of that expansion in the time since its release. Several months ago, work completed on The Dark Descent, the final story beat for Onslaught's campaign. Coming alongside several other updates, players have been waiting for a big new SWTOR expansion, and Legacy of the Sith will certainly fit the bill.
SWTOR's Legacy of the Sith will take players to the aquatic planet of Manaan, continuing the overall story of Old Republic's expansions by persuing Darth Malgus, a powerful Sith of legend. Players will see a level cap increase to 80 in this new story section and experience some of the hardest challenges in all of The Old Republic. The expansion also introduces new opportunities for players to team up via a Flashpoint set on the mountainous planet of Elom and an Operation that takes place inside a deep space research station.
In addition to new missions, SWTOR: Legacy of the Sith will debut a new feature called Combat Styles. This expands how players can customize their Star Wars avatar. Both new and returning players can mix and match the stories for each class with abilities picked from other related classes. Now, a Han Solo-type Smuggler will be able to use other gun-toting attacks while still playing out the same campaign. This allows those who prefer a specific gameplay style to play through other stories while holding onto their beloved skills. This streamlined experience comes alongside updates to itemization and loadouts and an updated class design interface upon new character creation.
The experience of Legacy of the Sith will start off this holiday season, but it's not a singular update. As with past SWTOR expansions, BioWare will continue to provide new content in the months to come. These updates will celebrate The Old Republic's tenth anniversary and run throughout 2022, featuring new events and other surprises.
Ten years is a long time for any game to receive continual updates, and it's significant that a game like Star Wars: The Old Republic can run that long in a space dominated by long-standing rivals World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy. While there are many who would still prefer a traditional sequel to or remake of Knights of the Old Republic at some point in the future, BioWare's MMORPG has more than proved itself as a destination for Star Wars fans and MMO gamers looking for some of the most consistent and engaging storytelling the franchise has to offer.
