Warning! Spoilers for The United States of Captain America #5 below.
Marvel Comics has revealed the final local Captain America in part of The United States of Captain America limited series, as active military officer Jeremy Merrick. Merrick will don his version of the shield in the comic's final issue. On Thursday, Marvel Comics debuted Merrick, a new Captain inspired by a real-life military member writer Christopher Cantwell met more than a decade ago.
Earlier this month, the debut issue of the United States of Captain America by Cantwell and Dale Eaglesham arrived at comic book stores. The series features Steve Rogers teaming up with other versions of the iconic hero as he seeks out the mystery behind his stolen shield. Each issue features Captain America running into "Captains" who are inspired to take up the mantle as the Captain America of their own local communities. Each Captain has a different creative team behind them. Aaron Fischer, the first openly gay Captain debuted in issue one, while other local Caps, such as the first indigenous Captain America Joe Gomez, will appear in future installments of the five-issue series.
Merrick will debut in The United States of Captain America #5. However, unlike other local Caps, Cantwell and Eaglesham won't hand creative duties to another team. Cantwell revealed Merrick will go on a top-secret assignment with NORAD, which will put him in the throws of Marvel villains. He will come face-to-face with multiple Captain America's. Along the way, he will pick up his own version of Captain America's shield but won't wear a costume. Merrick protects those closest to him, seemingly without any desire for admiration among his peers or fellow Caps. Check out the cover for the final issue of the series.
Check out Eaglesham's design for Merrick, which includes a look at his shield - which seems to be a variation on Captain America's first shield.
Cantwell revealed Merrick was inspired by a Staff Seargent named Jeremy in the US Army that he met while he was a production coordinator on a documentary about people serving in the Army National Guard. Cantwell revealed he became fast friends with Jeremy and looked up to him - as he helped challenge his idea of what a soldier was. You can check out Cantwell's full interview at Marvel.com.
Much like the previously announced Caps, Jeremy Merrick seems like a hero deserving of his own version of Captain America's shield. The new character will debut when The United States of Captain America #5 comes out in October.
