Loki Hints Sylvie’s Backstory Mystery Was A Lie | Screen Rant

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Loki episode 5.

Loki episode 5 suggests that Sylvie shares more traits of a Loki variant than it may initially appear, as it seems she's been lying about her supposed former love interest. Amongst the colorful and intriguing cast Loki has thus introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sylvie - initially known as Lady Loki among viewers - seems perhaps the most important new addition. The mixture of her mysterious background and seemingly developing romance with Loki establishes her as a figure that could potentially appear in the MCU past the point of the show.

That said, while viewers gain a relatively insightful understanding of the character herself throughout the course of the show thus far, very little has been revealed about the actual details of her life prior to when she was introduced into Loki. It's been made clear the TVA captured her practically as a child, that she developed great proficiency in magic, and as of Loki episode 5, it's been made apparent that she has something of a rough life with minimal positive human interactions. This last detail is especially important, as it's something that goes against what Sylvie had told Loki prior.

Just before Sylvie transports herself to the timeline Loki and Mobius are trapped in, she tells Renslayer she has "just one" good memory in her life - a memory that many have taken to be her moment with Loki in the episode prior. Though this itself could have been another lie from a God of Mischief, the sentiment is supported by her sheepish confession to Loki that she's never had friends before. Given Sylvie had also told Loki she had "quite a serious long-distance relationship with a postman" that she'd maintained in order to keep some semblance of normality in her timeline-hopping life. This means she either had a serious relationship that provided precisely zero positive memories, or - perhaps more likely - that Sylvie had been lying through her teeth to Loki at the time.

The latter makes sense for a lot of reasons, especially when looking at the character of Sylvie herself, and how she fits into the "role" of being a Loki variant. If there's one thing that every Loki variant seemingly shares, it's a desire for respect and authority - one that would make it hard for Sylvie to confess to a borderline stranger who had cursed her to be stuck on a dying timeline that she'd never had a romantic partner. Similarly, it seems entirely likely that at this point Sylvie was willing to sacrifice Loki at the earliest convenience, meaning that it didn't really matter if she lied to him or not. On another level, if Sylvie had possessed romantic feelings for Loki from this point, there is also a chance she was simply trying to impress him.

Loki has currently possessed a series of twists and turns, and so it's not impossible for Sylvie's backstory to turn out to be far different from how it currently appears. But thus far, it seems that Sylvie revealing that her previous tales were fabrications is a positive sign for the character, both in that it provides her further depth, and in that this depth suggests she may continue to be a force in the MCU after the Loki show.
