Lemire & Sorrentino's Primordial is "2001: A Space Odyssey Meets We3"

Writer Jeff Lemire and artist Andrea Sorrentino are teaming up once again to create an alternate history about the first animals sent into space in a comic book called Primordial. This Image Comics miniseries will run for six issues. Primordial will be a reunion of sorts for Lemire and Sorrentino, who previously worked together on the horror comic Gideon Falls, which won an Eisner in 2019 for best new series.

Lemire has an impressive list of titles under his belt, one of his biggest being his creation Sweet Tooth, which he both wrote and drew. The post-apocalyptic series is now a Netflix Original Series. Some of his other essential titles include Old Man Logan, All-New Hawkeye, and Black Hammer. Sorrentino has plenty of monumental titles to his name as well, including Green Arrow, I, Vampire, and Secret Empire. After working together on books like Gideon FallsOld Man Logan, and Green Arrow, the two are ready to bring their talents once again to Image Comics. The colorist for the miniseries to round out this award-winning team is Dave Stewart, a multiple Eisner Award-winner whose works include The Walking Dead and B.P.R.D Hell on Earth.

In their official press release, Image Comics calls Primordial a meeting of 2001: A Space Odyssey and We3. The six-issue miniseries blends together the sci-fi genre with a Cold War thriller. The story begins in 1957 when the USSR sent a dog named Laika, who never returned. Two years later, the US sent two monkeys, Able and Baker, who also never returned. These animals, unbeknownst to their countries of origin, were taken, and now they're on the way back. The main cover by Sorrentino as well as five preview pages are shared below.

In trying not to repeat themselves, Lemire shared, “I think with Primordial we are trying something totally new and different for us. This book is part Cold War thriller and part deep space sci-fi, but all grounded in an alt-history take on the first animals sent to space. This book is full of mystery, adventure and intrigue and Andrea and I have both tried to push ourselves into new story telling territory.” It will be interesting to see what new approaches this accomplished creative team can come up with.

The first issue of Primordial will hit comic book stands on September 15, 2021, and there will be plenty of covers for readers to choose from. Besides the main cover by Sorrentino, there will be variant covers by the likes of Christian Ward (Black Bolt), Dustin Nguyen (Batman: Streets of Gotham), Yuko Shimizu (The Unwritten), and an incentive copy from Lemire. Fans of Lemire can also enjoy another new miniseries from him that begins the same month, Mazebook.
