Justice League International's Return Teased in Human Target Series

The Justice League International era is one of the most beloved in the League’s 60 plus year history, and that team makes its triumphant return this fall in the pages of the upcoming DC Black Label The Human Target, written by Tom King with art by Greg Smallwood.

The team that would come to be known as Justice League International debuted at the end of the Legends crossover event and spun off into their own title not long after. The team featured League stalwarts such as Batman, Black Canary and Martian Manhunter, along with Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Fire, Ice, Mister Miracle, and Shazam. What set the Justice League International apart from other League eras was the humor; even though this iteration of the League fought some truly bad villains, there was always a light-hearted, joking element to the book—a direct counterpoint to the “grim and gritty” trend that was sweeping the comics field. This version would last five years before being reorganized, and the humor elements jettisoned in favor of more conventional superhero stories. There were occasional reunions, but the Justice League International seemed to be done. Though they briefly resurfaced in the New 52 era, they've been largely absent from the DC Universe, that is until writer Tom King announced a new title featuring the Human Target—and the cover art showcased the Justice League International members.

Artist Greg Smallwood took to Twitter to share the full cover, along with his process for creating the cover as well as interior preview pages, shared below. In addition to a page featuring the Human Target himself, there is also a full-team shot of the Justice League International (including G’nort and Captain Atom) as well as a page featuring a white-haired woman that could possibly be Justice League International member Ice.

None of the pages were lettered, nor were any plot details provided, but the return of the Justice League International is a cause for celebration. At a time when the comics industry was embracing a dark and violent aesthetic, Justice League International bucked the trend; as a result, Justice League International is still fondly remembered today. JLI creatros J.M. DeMatteis, Keith Giffen, and Kevin Maguire, gave readers one of the best versions of the Justice League ever, complete with major villains and battles, along with a family-like dynamic. The main question is how the Human Target factors into all of this? Is he protecting a member of Justice League International? Or is something deeper at work?

No release date has been set for The Human Target as of yet, but it will not only mark the return of this obscure character, but also the return of one of the most beloved incarnations of the Justice League ever.
