Developer 343 Industries says that the weapon drops in Halo Infinite, as well as other gameplay features, are inspired by iconic moments from different campaigns across the series. The studio says Halo Infinite will be a celebration of the Halo series so far and, at least based on nods like Master Chief's Halo Infinite armor, it looks like 343 Industries meant it.
The long awaited sixth entry to the Halo series is slated to release this holiday season, and both Xbox and 343 Industries have been opening up more and more about the game as its window approaches. The game was quite infamously delayed out of its original release window as part of the launch library for the Xbox Series X, following poor reactions to its first gameplay showcase. It seems to have developed well since then, however. Since last month's E3 2021 conference, various artists and developers have shed light on the different aspects of Halo Infinite's development process, from changes to Big Team Battle, to Halo Infinite's first season of multiplayer.
Just yesterday, another 343 Industries employee, Lead Multiplayer Designer Andrew Witts, got the chance to talk about his experiences working on Halo Infinite (courtesy of Pure Xbox). In his interview, Witts is asked what he believes fans will love the most, to which he answers, "I think that they will really latch onto how much multiplayer feels like a celebration of Halo all up. We've done a lot of things to bring iconic Halo campaign moments into multiplayer." Then, without even having to be asked, Witts elaborated on his answer, and explained some of the ways Halo Infinite will pay homage to previous entries in the series. For example, Witts refers to the aforementioned Big Team Battle, and notes that it will, "have weapon pods that fall from the sky just like the Halo 2 mission Delta Halo."
Witts further adds, "There are tons of references to past Halos," such as when the camera goes, "inside the player’s helmet in the match intro like the opening cutscene from Halo: CE," or how "the designs for Eagle and Cobra Team’s logos like past Halos." Those are just a few of the little nods that Halo Infinite's multiplayer will make to past Halo titles, but Witts notes that fans can expect many more examples like this when the game launches.
Two weeks ago, Phil Spencer said that, as a franchise, Halo will be fine, even if Halo Infinite flops, in an attempt to dispel any additional pressure 343 Industries may be feeling, and encourage the studio to work without inhibitions. It appears that this philosophy is helping to keep the ship afloat, as team members speak out about their experiences working on the game. 343 Industries is walking the line between changing the formula and trying new things, while also keeping somethings familiar and accessible for long-time fans of the series, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out when Halo Infinite releases this holiday season.
