How does the "library" in Netflix's Gunpowder Milkshake work and what role does it play in the movie's assassin underworld? The colorful action flick hit the streaming platform earlier this week and has been compared to the John Wick series. Like the world in the John Wick franchise, Gunpowder Milkshake sets up its own secret society of assassins. While John Wick features the Continental hotel chain as a safehouse for assassins, Gunpowder Milkshake's attention is on how assassins prep for their latest hits. The movie addresses that question through a library frequented by contract killers hiding in plain sight.
In Gunpowder Milkshake, the library itself acts as a sort of middle man in the assassin world, specifically for when assassins take on their new assignments. The movie shows this when Karen Gillan's Sam is hired to execute an embezzler from the shadowy organization known as The Firm. Sam's arrival at the library after taking on the mission shows its purpose is anything but educational.
The library is actually an armory that acts as a weapons repository for assassins to load up for their latest missions. Assassins employed by The Firm who arrive to the library to make "book exchanges" are really trading up weaponry, with the librarians acting as arms lenders. The books in the library actually conceal different kinds of bladed and ballistic weaponry, with different kinds of weapons held in different sections depending on their housing book's classification. Despite being a weapons cache first and foremost, the library is also not lacking for actual reading material, as seen when Carla Gugino's Madeline hands Sam an Agatha Christie book "for reading". Presumably, there are many books that don't contain weapons in order for the library to maintain discretion, lest some outsider wander in.
The librarians are also formidable themselves and are former allies of Sam's estranged mother Scarlet, played by Lena Headey. Along with Madeline, Angela Basset's Anna May and Michelle Yeoh's Florence also become allies of Sam's once she gets the full picture of the mission she's been tasked with and decides to turn on The Firm, with Scarlet also re-entering her daughter's life. With their enemies in pursuit, the library becomes the location of the group's last stand against The Firm, with the five assassins extremely well-armed due to having the home turf advantage.
The library's function is pretty straightforward in the movie, and with the sequel the movie's ending sets up, the beginnings of the library and how the former assassins came to be among its custodians could be delved into. If the story of Gunpowder Milkshake continues, as director Navot Papushado has spoken about, viewers could get a deeper glimpse into the library's function in arming up assassins as they head out for their newly assigned hits.
