The Conjurverse Already Has Its Perfect Ed & Lorraine Successor

The lead characters of The Conjuring and its sequels, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, will eventually require a perfect cinematic successor. In the real world, Ed and Lorraine continued their involvement with the creepy world of ghosts and demons up until their respective deaths in 2006 and 2019. Unfortunately, if the ongoing Conjurverse continues toward the present day, the events of the series will eventually catch up with their real-life deaths, meaning that neither Ed nor Lorraine will be around to headline future entries in the franchise. Thankfully, the films have already set up an ideal person to continue their lasting legacy.

In the three Conjuring movies that have been made so far, the stories have focused squarely on Ed and Lorraine. As was the case in reality, the couple worked as a team to help families in need and investigate supernatural happenings worldwide. Aside from a few collaborations with local experts and fellow paranormal researchers, the films have put the Warrens in the center of the action. Sadly, as the films continue to get closer and closer to the present, keeping the duo as the main characters becomes less and less viable. Setting an Ed and Lorraine-led Conjuring movie in the early 2000s, for example, would likely require that stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga either wear heavy makeup or be recast entirely. It's unlikely that audiences would accept a film made in this way and even less likely that they'd return to watch more films with different, elderly versions of the couple.

With all of this taken into account, setting the groundwork for a Conjuring film without the Warren duo would be a smart move. While it might be hard to imagine a Conjuring movie without Ed or Lorraine, there’s still an easy way that such a film could work while still keeping the franchise centered on the Warren family. The solution: pass the torch to young Judy Warren, the daughter of Ed and Lorraine. Handing Judy the reigns would not only allow her to continue her parents’ work but would also open up fresh storytelling possibilities for new films in the Conjurverse.

While the real-life Judy didn't take up her parents' ghost-chasing mantle, there's no reason why her fictionalized big-screen counterpart couldn't follow this path. After all, the film version of Judy is already prepared for a life of paranormal research. Throughout the Conjuring films, Judy experiences almost as many bizarre and horrifying events as her parents. These incidents include a few run-ins with the possessed doll Annabelle and witnessing her mother’s psychic connection to the demonic nun Valak. In addition to this, Judy has grown up in a home filled to bursting with haunted items, many of which are dangerous enough to be fatal if mishandled. As a result, Judy knows all too well the horrors of dealing with the paranormal, and this knowledge would serve her well as an investigator.

Switching the focus of the Conjurverse to Judy would also allow future films to experiment with an exciting possibility: the idea that Judy could be a perfect blend of both of her parents. In the first three Conjuring films, Ed and Lorraine each bring their own gifts to their investigations; Ed is an expert demonologist with plenty of historical, religious, and supernatural knowledge to aid each case, and Lorraine is a clairvoyant with psychic abilities and the gift of foresight. If Judy were to inherit both of these skills as an adult, she could rise to become an even more skilled investigator than either of her parents. With Judy leading the charge, the legacy of The Conjuring could easily continue into the present day while also opening the doors to new and terrifying concepts that will keep audiences coming back to new sequels and spinoffs again and again.
