Larry King & Alex Trebek Honored with Posthumous Emmy Award Wins

Late television hosts Larry King and Alex Trebek were both honored at the Daytime Emmys. King was a renowned talk show host with an extensive career, getting his start in radio in the 1950s. His fame skyrocketed when he became the host of the late-night radio show The Larry King Show. After making cameos in blockbusters like Ghostbusters, he was granted his own late-night TV show Larry King Now, which he hosted from 2005 to 2010. King passed away on January 23, 2021 from sepsis at age 87.

Trebek hosted Jeopardy! for 37 years. He was there from the game show's premiere in 1984 up until 2020, the year that he passed. Trebek became a staple of the game show series with his wit and charm. Trebek revealed he was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer in 2019. He continued to film as he battled cancer and ultimately passed on November 8, 2020 at 80 years old. He had pre-filmed Jeopardy! episodes which aired up until January 8, 2021. He is survived by his wife Jean Currivan and his three kids.

King and Trebek both won posthumous awards at the Daytime Emmys (via People). Trebek was awarded with Outstanding Game Show Host for his work on Jeopardy! and King received the award for Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host for his work on Ora TV's Larry King Now. King and Trebek's respective children, Matt Trebek and Emily Trebek and Chance King and Cannon King, accepted the awards on behalf of their fathers. Both sets of children gave moving speeches as they accepted the awards in their honor.

In Matt and Emily's speech, they addressed their father's time on Jeopardy!. Matt expressed that his father was "honored" to host Jeopardy! for as long as he did and "loved every bit of it." Emily shared that the show "became his second family" and felt fortunate and excited to go to work "even during his battle with cancer." King's children also gave a speech in which Cannon expressed that he was "thankful" to accept the award on his father's behalf and Chance said he knew his father was "looking down on us." He added that "this last season was a testament for his love of broadcasting." The speeches from their young adult children were not only moving but showed their kids' bravery to give a public tribute to their recently-passed parents.

Trebek and King were both extremely influential in their fields of expertise so their posthumous Emmy Awards are definitely well-earned. Both of their passing had a large impacted on their industry and community. Jeopardy! is still on the search for a new host, wanting to find someone worthy of stepping up as host of the game show. King was also still appearing in projects as himself up until his passing. Both are greatly missed and truly deserve the recognition they received during the Daytime Emmys.
