Ugly Betty's characters are all brilliant in one way or another. Their lives are tangled in absurd plotlines with comedic repercussions and unexpected solutions. Every character has a motivation, a goal, a purpose, and ambition. Intelligence is a difficult thing to measure. It is not only how smart, creative, observant, and reactive a person is, but how they understand and apply their knowledge, what they value, and who they choose to be.
A person can be adept in the ways of people, books, cooperation, and street smarts. But it is their overall intelligence from a holistic perspective and how they choose to use it that makes them truly intelligent.
10 Amanda
Amanda is brilliant when it comes to her understanding of fashion and her ability to see connections while styling clothing. She has aesthetic and creative intelligence. Throughout the series, Amanda shows the ability to improve and adapt. She thinks less of her own selfish desires and builds the capacity to show compassion.
Although Amanda can let the obvious slip past her on a regular basis, she is able to read into people's expressions and determine what advice is best, when she's in the mood.
9 Wilhelmina Slater
Wilhelmina is a genius. She's calculating, clever, honest, and feared. But instead of putting her intellect towards the greater good, she used it to further her own agenda. She spent her time planning complex schemes and didn't care if she placed people in jeopardy.
Wilhelmina climbed her way to a respected position at Meade, but she wanted more power. She wanted control. Her inability to relent with grace lead to selfish actions and a disregard for morals. She was not all cold though, Wilhelmina knew a good idea when she heard one and gave credit where credit was due.
8 Hilda Suarez
Hilda has both compassion, loyalty, bravery, and street smarts. She is congenial and knows her way with people. She is a kind, understanding, and supportive mother who is independent but also welcomes the family environment.
Hilda experiments with her career, doing what she can to be financially stable, and finds her calling in hairstyling. She provides life experience, advice, and tries her best to be there for others.
7 Alexis Meade
Alexis Meade can be as bold as she can be daft. She's brilliant but in a daring kind of way. She knows her way around the Meade empire but is fickle in her allegiances. She is manipulative and knows people's weaknesses.
But Alexis can be just as compassionate as she can blatant. She is able to realize what will help profit a situation, separating individuals from the equation. Her rash behavior leads to events that could have been prevented.
6 Justin Suarez
Justin is creative. He's supportive. He can read situations well and interpret family situations. Like Amanda, Justin is passionate about fashion. He can see things that others can't and will make himself known if he has a suggestion.
Justin doesn't resort to manipulation, he doesn't make rash decisions but thinks things over and provides advice to his mother and aunt. Justin is both adventurous and cautious. He has faith in others. He seeks guidance when he feels lost.
5 Marc St. James
Marc St. James is brilliant and ambitious, but at the same time, he can be blinded by his pursuits. He is a perfectionist who can be judgemental of others. During most of the series, Marc is Wilhelmina's right-hand man; he's the supporting schemer in her plans.
Although this isn't a great use for his intelligent mind, Marc grows throughout the show, using his connections to create a positive influence and voicing his truths rather than simply standing by and watching as bad things unfold.
4 Daniel Meade
What made Ugly Betty so special was the progression of its' characters. The Daniel Meade of season 1 blossomed from the doubtful, lost, avoidant, and manipulated man he was, to a confident, compassionate, and sacrificial individual.
Daniel's intelligence is his ability to adapt, care, work in cooperation, and place the solution above himself. He still makes emotion-driven mistakes in later seasons, but his intentions were greatly improved upon.
3 Claire Meade
Kindness, compassion, hope, and the desire to see others happy are beautiful values. Claire Meade was intelligent in the way of her morality. In the series, Claire is placed on trial for the murder of Fey Sommers, but it was revealed that Claire was in a manic state caused by a tainted perfume.
Claire becomes a mother to Betty. She looks out for her children, acknowledged her mistakes, and saw connections that others could not see. She was willing to sacrifice her freedom for her family. She is insightful and perceptive.
2 Ignacio Suarez
A trustworthy person. A person who is selfless and loving. A person who has ideals but who is flexible and understanding. Ignacio Suarez uses his experiences to provide the best life he can for his family and those that orbit their lives.
Despite the fact that he can be a little proud and stubborn, Ignacio is one of the more level-headed, warm, and rational characters on the show. He believes in others and supports their dreams. He lets his daughters learn through their mistakes and is always there for them.
1 Betty Suarez
Betty's intelligence stems from her compassion and enthusiasm. Betty is a dreamer, a hopeful and inspiring individual. She is brilliant when it comes to keeping a positive outlook and looking for solutions to problems. She is bright and perceptive, astute, and inquisitive.
Although she sometimes prioritizes the wrong thing, Betty has a pure heart and motivation. She will avoid placing anyone down to get to where she wants, choosing to be fair and just. In further seasons, Betty grows in her emotional control and confidence.
