Shazam Director Trolls The Rock With Black Adam April Fool's Joke

The director of the upcoming Shazam movies, David Sandberg, just trolled The Rock with a Black Adam April Fool's Day joke. Shazam is a DC movie that was just released in 2019. It starred Zachary Levi as the title character playing a child who gets to be an adult superhero whenever he yells the word, "Shazam!" It was a fun, lighthearted movie that was met with glowing reviews and granted a sequel that is being released in 2023.

Black Adam is another DC superhero movie coming out next year. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is attached to star as the title character. The film has long been in the works and has been in development now for over 10 years. The Rock recently took over Time Square in New York City to announce that his movie would be released in July 2022. The story will explore the character's origins from thousands of years ago and what he is doing in the present day. Johnson promises that Black Adam will not be a traditional good guy and that he will rebel against the typical superhero tropes.

Both Shazam and Black Adam are known comic book rivals, which is why it is funny that Sandberg joked about Black Adam in a recent social media post. On Sandberg's Instagram, he posted a doctored image of a tweet from Deadline sharing an article with a headline that indicates Johnson believes Shazam could kick Black Adam's butt. An image showing The Rock in his black and yellow superhero suit is attached to the article. As of now, The Rock has yet to respond.

The Rock has been preparing for his role in Black Adam by training in his gym non-stop. Since January, the actor has been posting several training photos while continuing to update fans on his social media accounts. The Rock has even been teasing a major power shake-up in the DC Universe, captioning photos with “The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change." This proves that Johnson means business when it comes to his first superhero movie and plans for Black Adam to be a major force in DC films going forward.

This is why Sandberg's joke is so funny because it directly indicates the exact opposite of what The Rock's been cooking up for the past several months. Sandberg's joke is appropriate for the characters since they are arch enemies in the comics, so this could be him turning that comic book rivalry into fun real-life banter. Warner Bros. had originally wanted to see Black Adam face off against Billy Batson in the 2019 Shazam film, but that never ended up happening. It is still possible that Black Adam and Shazam team up for future movies, but for now, there are no confirmed plans.
