Warning: contains spoilers for Beta Ray Bill #1
One of Marvel's best monsters is the dragon Fin Fang Foom, and a recent comic revealed that he's come under the King in Black's control. Knull has infected many heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe, using symbiotes to control the likes of Storm and Daredevil. Still, even with those powerful heroes, the prospect of a monster like Foom powered up by symbiotes is enough to make any hero quiver in fear.
The new series Beta Ray Bill from writer and artist Daniel Warren Johnson sees the former Thor preparing to defend Asgard from the oncoming threat of Foom. Though Bill's speech to the assembled Asgardians is riveting, nothing can prepare them for Foom. With a single punch, Foom smashes through Asgard's ramparts and begins his assault. He shrugs off the onslaught of arrows and bites into the puny soldiers without a second thought. He easily swats Bill away and widens the hole in Asgard's defenses, looming over Lady Sif. Luckily for Asgard, Bill is not so easily felled.
Using all of his considerable strength, Beta Ray Bill grabs Foom by the tail and slams the massive Dragon into the ground. Resilient himself, Foom responds with a gargantuan punch to Bill's chest, sending the hero tumbling backward. Foom tells Bill that he loves horse meat, but before he can make good on his threat, Thor steals Bill's glory by arriving to roast Foom with lightning. Though readers don't see what the Asgardians do with Foom, they do see his symbiote creep away, leaving the defeated dragon behind.
The biggest surprise about Foom's time serving Knull is that it didn't happen sooner. The King in Black is known for his army of symbiote dragons, so it makes sense for him to enlist Foom. Unfortunately, Foom's appearance here isn't all that different from his normal appearance. It doesn't appear as though the symbiote gives him any extra powers or strength, and he barely even looks different aside from a slightly darker color scheme and Knull's signature red swirl on his head. All of this is absolutely fine though, the comic isn't about Foom, it's about Beta Ray Bill. Foom admirably performs his role as a force for the Asgardians to overcome. It's just a shame that Foom's symbiote upgrade isn't more apparent.
Despite this though, the symbiote does serve one purpose, maintaining Foom's character arc. Over in Agents of Wakanda Fin Fang Foom made peace with earth's heroes and declared that he would leave them alone if they promised to do the same for him. By having Knull take control of him, he is morally absolved for attacking Asgard, and future writers can still maintain his development. Still, with or without the King in Black's powers, Fin Fang Foom is a force to be reckoned with.
