Superman has had many looks and outfits over the past 83 years, and now they all get the spotlight in a stunning variant cover for Action Comics #1033 by artist Julian Totino Tedesco.
When the Man of Steel first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, much of what fans know about his costume was established in comic book lore: the S-shield, the cape, the red trunks, etc. While there have been some modifications made to the outfit over time - such as the blue trunks of the New 52 era - it has stayed largely the same. Over time, there have been a few deviations, such as the all-black outfit he wore when he first returned from the dead, or the now-infamous “Electric Superman” of the late '90s. These new looks were temporary, but now the best of them are featured on this brand new variant cover for the upcoming Action Comics #1033. Over the last few years, Julian Totino Tedesco has created some amazing cover art for both Marvel and DC, putting his personal touch on such books as Harley Quinn and Hawkman, and this new piece continues this winning streak.
The classic Superman stands front and center on the cover and is flanked by other Supermen, past and present. The Electric Superman is there, as is the black-suited, long-haired Superman. Both New 52 Supermen are accounted for, as is the Golden Age Superman. There are also Supermen dressed in Kryptonian garb - one from the John Byrne Man of Steel era and the other wearing a Kryptonian military outfit. It is a nice mixture of classic and off-the-beaten-path costumes and a trip down memory lane for long-time fans of the Man of Steel.
Superman’s costume is iconic, as much a part of him as his powers or his secret identity, and because it is so well-known, there have been few tweaks to it. The more dramatic departures, such as the Electric Superman, serve to remind fans in the end why the original is great in the first place. Seeing Superman wear outfits from his homeworld is a nice touch as well, serving as a reminder that Superman is an alien. The cover also sticks to the heroic interpretations; absent are the various Elseworlds-related outfits he has sported over the years, such as the Red Son Superman, or Ultraman (the evil Superman of Earth-3).
In his 80-plus years of existence, Superman has sported a variety of costumes, and fans can see them one more time in Julian Totino Tedesco’s variant cover for Action Comics #1033, on sale in print and on digital platforms this July.
