Captain Marvel Can't Learn Magic Because She'd Be Too Dangerous

Warning! Spoilers for Captain Marvel #28 below!

Captain Marvel is desperate to learn magic and in order to do so, she's turned to some of the top sorcerers in the Marvel Universe, including the Scarlet Witch. Desperately trying to prevent a dark future where billions will die - including her Avengers teammates - Carol Danvers is hoping to conquer her biggest weakness and learn magic herself.

Captain Marvel is already one of the most powerful Avengers, but after being transported to a timeline ruled by a dictator named Ove, she returned, determined to fight back with magic. Ove, the daughter of the sorceress Enchantress and Namor, the Sub-Mariner, successfully used Captain Marvel's powers to transport from the future to the main timeline. As Carol deals with a break-up (which is ripe with time-travel shenanigans), she hooks up with Doctor Strange. Now, she's returning to Strange for help to stop Ove. However, the magic community isn't very keen on giving the superpowered Avenger even more power.

In Captain Marvel #28 by Kelly Thompson, Jacopo Camagni, Espen Grundetjern, and VC's Clayton Cowles, Carol can't stop thinking and having nightmares about Ove destroying her current timeline. She meets up with Spider-Woman and the pair head to the Sanctum Santorum. Jessica Drew figures out Carol and Strange slept together and is called away before the trio has a conversation - making things a little awkward. When Captain Marvel tells Strange she wants to learn magic, he laughs in her face. He explains learning magic takes time and would take away her greatest weakness, leaving everyone else vulnerable. After getting a new costume, taking a trip to the Bar with No Doors, reliving facing Ove, and a kiss with Strange - Captain Marvel looks for someone who will teach her. She talks to different magic users, including Niko Minoru, Magik, Wiccan, Doctor Voodo, and Talisman, before reaching Scarlet Witch, who declines to help her.

Scarlet Witch has experience in losing control when it comes to magic and doesn't want to see Captain Marvel run into a similar situation. She agrees with Doctor Strange's assessment and tells her "this is not a good path for you, Carol. Take it from someone who knows." Disheartened, Carol turns to the last magic user fans might expect: Ove's mother Enchantress.

Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, and the magic community understand the power one wields when they learn magic. Captain Marvel gaining magical abilities would effectively give her no weaknesses and while that would certainly help in defeating Ove, it could take her down a dark path. Scarlet Witch doesn't want Carol to embrace the darkness in order to prevent a future that hasn't happened yet. Captain Marvel is determined to stop Ove, no matter the cost - even if it means turning to the Enchantress. Captain Marvel #28 is in stores now.
