Why The Justice League Is Expanding With a New Roster

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League #59

It's a new era for DC Comics' Justice League, and the greatest heroes in the DC Universe are going to be changing in some pretty big ways with an expansion to their roster. The idea comes from Oliver Queen's Green Arrow, and his proposal to grow and add new members to the team is also seconded by Superman. Furthermore, it's also interesting to learn exactly why the Green Arrow feels as though the League needs new heroes, and it's not because they need more strength or power. Instead, it's all about enabling them to do more and better seek justice for all.

Justice League #59 comes from the all new creative team of writer Brian Micheal Bendis with art by David Marquez. The issue sees the League getting in the middle of Black Adam fighting an all new villain from another dimension known as Brutus. After a brief skirmish, Brutus retreats in the face of the League's power, as he wasn't prepared for such resistance in his attempts to take over this new world he's visited. Afterwards, Black Adam leaves to continue ruling his nation of Kahndaq, while the League return to the Hall of Justice.

Once the League returns to debrief their first encounter with Brutus, Green Arrow and Black Canary arrive and Oliver Queen voices his concerns that the League isn't doing all that it could to bring justice to the world. In his mind, they could be helping more than they do, believing that a solution would be to bring in fresh eyes to the team. Oliver is worried that they've all grown too close to one another, which has led to a more singular mindset.

In theory, Green Arrow's idea isn't bad at all. For any kind of team, it's always good to have differing opinions and opportunities for debate, as it allows for the best solutions to come to the surface in order to achieve the best results. Furthermore, the addition of fresh faces and perspectives to the Justice League can only help them help others on a wider and grander scale than ever before: justice for all. Superman wholeheartedly agrees, and it is evident during the aftermath of the fight with Brutus that Superman wants to reach out to Black Adam. Based on the cover and previous teases from DC Comics, it's basically locked in that Adam will be asked to join the ranks of the League, which will certainly be interesting. Given his history, he'll no doubt do exactly what Green Arrow's looking for, as his colder nature and willingness to do whatever's necessary for victory will certainly cause disruption and dissent. Additionally, Wonder Woman's mother Queen Hippolyta will be joining the team, as well as newcomer Naomi McDuffie in future issues.

While this is all well and good for the present day in the DC Universe, there is a concern about what was seen in DC's Future State event, which revealed that an expansion of the League will result in betrayal and devastation. While it should also be noted that the depicted future is not set in stone, the League is expanding all the same. Hopefully, the Justice League will be able to deviate from the dark path that potentially lies ahead, and instead maintain the new positive era that can come from growing the League's roster in DC Comics.
