Big Brother: Why BB23 Should Increase The Show's $500k Grand Prize

After 20 years on the air, Big Brother 23 is the perfect time for production to increase the series' grand prize of $500,000. Since its very first season, the American edition of Big Brother has given out the exact same grand prize amount to its winners: $500,000. It was 2000 when this prize was awarded to Big Brother 1 winner Eddie McGee, and that amount of money meant much more back then. While this still feels like a lot of money to the average person, inflation must be taken into consideration, and the value of $500,000 just isn't the same as it was in 2000.

When BB22 was announced as an All-Stars season, many fans wondered if the show would finally increase its grand prize. That season celebrated 20 years of the series and featured an entire cast of fan-favorite players, so it made perfect sense for that cycle to finally award a higher grand prize. But that definitely didn't happen on BB22, as Cody Calafiore was still awarded the same $500,000 that every other BB winner in history received. Now that Big Brother 23 is looming ahead, it is about time for the production team to commit to a higher grand prize on the series.

When calculating the value of the Big Brother grand prize with inflation, the numbers simply don't lie. The $500,000 amount that Eddie McGee received for winning BB1 would be worth more than $750,000 nowadays. The opposite is also true: winning $500,000 in 2021 would be like winning $300,000 in 2000. When inflation is taken into consideration, there is a significant difference between the grand prize that was awarded on BB1 and the prize that was given out on BB22. As such, it makes sense to raise the Big Brother 23 prize to something like $750,000, or even to $1 million.

On the latest Survivor: Winners At War season, production raised the grand prize from $1 million to $2 million. It made sense given how difficult it always is to compete on Survivor, and even more sense for a season that featured an entire cast of past winners. Using that as an example, it would be expected for Big Brother 23 to follow suit in order to better incentivize the houseguests to play their best game on the show.

In 2021, a brand-new lineup of contestants will get to play Big Brother 23. Hopefully, this cycle will feature a lot of strategizing and great game moves.
