DC's New Wonder Woman Just Made The Underworld's Guard Dog Play Fetch

Warning: Spoilers for Future State: Wonder Woman #2 from Joëlle Jones and Jordie Bellaire

Even after one issue readers have become acutely aware that Yara Flor doesn't follow the same rules her Amazon sister Diana Prince adheres to as Wonder Woman. She's impatient, impulsive, and a bit curt in her interactions with others. From the get-go it seems this Brazilian goddess has somewhat of a "by any means necessary" mentality. And with the previews for Future State: Wonder Woman #2, those means are getting a bit more creative.

Readers following the Future State releases already saw Yara Flor poach a Hydra in order to use its horn as leverage for passage into Hell; threaten her forest spirit friend, a Caipora; and even steal money from a dammed soul in the underworld. Her track record so far has proven her to be a bit more on the aggressive and impulsive side of the Wonder Woman equation. In a way though, that makes her all the more refreshing and enticing to watch. This also means that fans are sure to be in for an interesting ride with her character - including some out of the box solutions to sticky situations she's bound to find herself in.

Previews for Future State: Wonder Woman #2 reveal that she's already found herself in dire circumstances due to her impulsiveness. By causing a ruckus at the River Styx, she unintentionally catches the attention of the Underworld's very own guard dog, Cerberus. Now, any regular guard dog would be of no consequence to a literal goddess, but those who know anything about Greek mythos, know that Cerberus is a little bit meaner, a little big bigger, and has a lot more heads than your average earthly pup. Nevertheless, it seems Yara has a hunch that he will respond to the same age old tactics that every day dogs do, or at least hopes he will. A snap decision leads her to snatch a bone off the arm of Charon, Hades' ferryman, and use it to play fetch with the slobbering guard of the Underworld. Not only does it work to distract him from attacking her, but it sends him running off after the makeshift stick, allowing Yara to get away unscathed. It looks like even this Wonder Woman's quick thinking can produce some positive outcomes.

Of course, Charon probably didn't appreciate getting his forearm ripped off in the middle of transporting paying passengers across the River Styx, but at least it went to good use by saving Yara's hide from having to go head to head with Cerberus. It may not have been the most selfless move on her part, but it is a good representation of ingenuity at its finest. If there's one thing that's certain about DC's newest Wonder Woman, it's that she's quick on her feet and isn't afraid to ruffle a few feathers in her adventures.

It's always compelling to see a new hero who doesn't quite fit into the superhero formula laid out by their predecessors. Without a doubt, readers are in for an exhilarating ride with this Wonder Woman as she travels deeper into the throws of Hades' territory in search for her warrior sister... and maybe even a little revenge.
