WandaVision Originally Didn’t Include Monica Rambeau

According to a producer for the upcoming series, Monica Rambeau was not part of the original plan for WandaVision. Disney’s first MCU original series to premiere on Disney+, WandaVision, will begin weekly episode airings of its first season on Friday, January 15. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany will both reprise their respective roles as Scarlet Witch and Vision, in a series that looks to be a trippy, hyper-stylized journey through alternate realities and different decades of American sitcoms.

Early trailer footage and casting news for WandaVision revealed that Monica Rambeau would also feature in the series, played by Teyonah Parris. Rambeau made her MCU debut as a child in 2019’s Captain Marvel, where she was portrayed at different ages by Akira and Azari Akbar. In the comics, Rambeau is a major figure, becoming the second Captain Marvel and even leading the Avengers. It’s unclear what her role will be in WandaVision, but Parris has been confirmed to be playing her again in Captain Marvel 2.

Whatever plans WandaVision has for Rambeau, they weren’t part of the series’ original pitch. Speaking recently with SFX Magazine (via CBR), co-executive producer Mary Livanos said the character’s inclusion was a relatively late development. Livanos noted that the addition of Rambeau came from her research into past Avengers comics. "Her inclusion in the series was a discovery,” Livanos said, “and not quite mapped out, but it's really enriched the show."

With so much about WandaVision being kept entirely under wraps leading up to its debut, any peek behind the curtain is interesting. The show will set the standard in many ways for the future MCU series to come, like The Falcon and Winter Soldier and Loki. Given how much success Disney has found already with similar Star Wars programming in The Mandalorian, the odds seem stacked in WandaVision’s favor. As the series’ details remain shrouded in mystery, Rambeau’s role in the story could be nearly anything.

It’s possible WandaVision sets up Rambeau’s evolution into a proper superhero, but that will depend on exactly how the story plays out. Given Vision’s apparent death in Avengers: Infinity War, his presence in the new show brings up numerous questions. Whether or not the show's events are real, how real, and when it all takes place have yet to be determined. One way or another, WandaVision looks like it will set up Monica Rambeau’s future in the MCU.
