Demon’s Souls’ Strange Noises Are A Glitch, Not A Secret, Sony Says

Sony has confirmed that the ominous noises fans have been hearing in the Demon's Souls remake are just a simple bug, and not a secret. This landmark PS5 launch title does seem to have a proliferation of both. Even though the game is supposed to be an entirely faithful recreation of From Software's original title, fans have already discovered an easter egg in the form of a mysterious hidden door which, when finally opened, was found to contain a set of fan-requested armor.

This hidden door led fans to expect even more secrets scattered throughout Bluepoint Games' remake. This, in turn, led the community to fixate on a series of bizarre clanging sounds which can be heard echoing throughout the hallways of the game, with no evident cause. Speculation abounded on what these noises could mean. The most popular theory contended that they were a hint related to From Software's upcoming RPG Elden Ring, which has been under tight wraps since its cryptic reveal. Fans detected a similarity between the clanging noise in Demon's Souls and the hammer from the Elden Ring teaser, and took that connection as a sign that the long awaited game was finally on its way.

Unfortunately, this optimistic theory has been officially debunked. Sony has informed Kotaku that the noises are caused by a simple audio glitch that Bluepoint is currently working to fix, and are not a sneaky easter egg put in by developers. As disappointing as it is to have this theory debunked, it does make sense. As Kotaku points out, From Software isn't actually involved in the Demon's Souls remake, so using it to market Elden Ring would be a pretty illogical decision. But Elden Ring fans have been so starved for updates that they've started making elaborate fan content for a game that doesn't exist yet. It makes sense that they would latch onto a possible connection like this.

Ultimately, though, it's understandable that Bluepoint has left the remake light on easter eggs. The developer has been committed to maintaining From Software's vision for the original game, and keeping that intent as thoroughly unchanged as possible. The developer even declined to add a possible easy mode to the game, simply out of fear of doing disservice to the original developer's vision. This commitment to respecting From Software is admirable, but it does make any further easter egg theories a lot less feasible.

In the end it seems like impatient Elden Ring fans still have a long wait ahead of them. However, there is some hope; Xbox head Phil Spencer claims that the new Soulslike is already playable, and the upcoming Game Awards do seem like an excellent opportunity to share news. Hopefully From Software won't keep fans in the dark too much longer. One just hopes that Elden Ring will live up to the expectations fans have placed on it.
