WoW: Shadowlands Launch Celebrated By Final Fantasy In Awesome Tribute

The launch of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is being celebrated by none other than the team behind Final Fantasy XIV in a touching and shadowy tribute. Shadowlands is a major expansion to the iconic MMORPG which launches today, following a surprisingly well-received delay so that Blizzard could address bug fixes and general content improvement. Fans have been looking forward to the update for a while now. It's set to expand on Sylvanas's relationship with the mysterious and menacing Jailer and majorly rework the game's leveling system.

World of Warcraft has been one of if not the most prominent MMORPG in modern culture for years now, but it's not the only one on the market. Final Fantasy XIV has proven to be an absolute powerhouse, and this despite an initial launch so disastrous that the developers destroyed the entire in-game world and remade it from scratch. Coincidentally, World of Warcraft isn't even the only major MMORPG with a shadow-themed expansion. Last year saw the release of Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, the RPG's third major expansion. Shadowbringers was widely praised for its deep and complex story and its unique setting, and is generally considered a masterstroke in an already-thriving online game.

The coincidence clearly isn't lost on Square Enix. Earlier today, the official Final Fantasy XIV Twitter account posted a message to World of Warcraft, congratulating it on the launch of Shadowlands. The message welcomed World of Warcraft to the shadows, clearly and openly acknowledging the similarities between the two major expansions. To drive the point home, Square Enix even included an image from the Shadowbringers expansion itself. The congratulatory sentiment was prominent, though, and the official World of Warcraft Twitter account has already replied in gratitude for Square's encouraging message.

This is far from the first example of competitors being friendly on Twitter. When the Xbox Series X launched earlier this month, the official PlayStation account turned out to congratulate its bitter rival, as did PlayStation exclusive God of War director Cory Barlog. These messages don't mean too much in the grand scheme of things; Sony and Microsoft remain fierce competitors overall. But they're still a very pleasant thing to see online. The launch of a major expansion like Shadowlands is a big deal, and definitely cause for celebration instead of criticism, no matter what side one is on.

There is a lot of content in Shadowlands to excite World of Warcraft fans of any stripe. The wealth of cinematics Blizzard has been pumping out to prepare fans for the release certainly indicate as much. Fans are sure to sink hours into the new content as they explore the breadth of everything that World of Warcraft: Shadowlands has to offer, and it's good to know that even Final Fantasy XIV supports them in this endeavor.
