The Mandalorian: Will Boba Fett Put His Armor On Again?

The long-anticipated return of Boba Fett in The Mandalorian shows the original trilogy's Mandalorian-armored warrior and bounty hunter stripped down to homely robes, so it's a wonder if he'll ever put the traditional armor on again. Viewers got a hint of Boba Fett's return early on in the episode, when the Marshal of Mos Pelgo, Cobb Vanth, entered with Boba Fett's armor - albeit a shoddy and scraped-up version. It's clear from the beginning that Vanth was no Mandalorian, but the episode opened up the possibility that if his armor had survived in Star Wars canon, then maybe Boba Fett had, too.

The last time Boba Fett was canonically seen in the Star Wars timeline was in Return of the Jedi, when he (apparently) met his cruel and untimely demise after falling into the Sarlacc pit. Though the Expanded Universe showed Boba Fett escaping from the pit, Lucasfilm retconned these stories in preparation for the sequel trilogy. The Mandalorian marks Boba Fett's official return to Star Wars, but it's not yet clear what role he'll play with Din Djarin and The Child, or how their paths might cross.

Given what's shown in the episode, it's unlikely that Boba Fett will put on his armor again. If Boba Fett still felt a connection with Mandalorians at this point in his life (even though he isn't a real Mandalorian), he would have tried to find it when the Jawas scavenged it or after Cobb Vanth bought it off. Though Boba Fett's reappearance implies that he has some part to play in The Mandalorian, it's also implied that he won't be acting in the capacity as he did in the original trilogy. His experience with the Sarlacc pit seems to have changed him and his values; Boba Fett's first appearance shows him wearing the garb and carrying the armor of Tusken Raiders, so it's possible he adopted their culture in order to survive on Tatooine. While his iconic helmet and armor are still safe with Din Djarin, Boba Fett probably won't go out of his way to find it.

Even if Boba Fett seemed mildly interested in putting his armor on again, it's so damaged that it's almost ineffective. Though it's shown in Cobb Vanth's flashback that some elements of Boba Fett's customized armor still work (like the Heads Up Display and the rocket launcher), they may be the only things that are still functioning. It's unclear how much time has passed since Cobb Vanth became the Marshal, which means that the iconic suit could have endured anywhere from a few months to several years of wear-and-tear.

Plus, if Cobb Vanth struggles to fit into Boba Fett's Mandalorian armor, then the bounty hunter may also have some difficulty donning his old suit again. From what's shown of Boba Fett at the end of the episode, it's clear that he's aged quite a bit. The armor that was just the right size for him in his youth probably would need some adjustments to fit the now middle-aged, former bounty hunter. If Boba Fett tried to reclaim his armor, it's possible that the only part he'd still be able to squeeze into is the Durasteel helmet.

Boba Fett has finally returned to the Star Wars canon in The Mandalorian, but it's unclear how much he's actually changed since his time in the original trilogy. Most of the odds seem stacked against him suiting up again, but it's possible that an encounter with Din Djarin might change that. The fact remains that his armor is in a Mandalorian's hands; if Boba Fett so chooses, it's up for the taking.
