Recasting The Characters Of Edward Scissorhands (If It Was Made Today)

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton have collaborated on many projects over their respective careers, but many still consider their first movie together to be the best. Edward Scissorhands is the story of an artificially-made young man with scissors for hands who is taken in by a kind suburban family.

The movie feels like a modern fairy tale as only Burton can create. Depp gives a strange yet compelling performance in the lead role, and he is backed by an impressive supporting cast. Thinking about if the film were made today, there are a lot of exciting possibilities for which actors could fill these colorful roles.

10 The Inventor - Ian McKellen

Horror icon Vincent Price made his final on-screen appearance in the role of the Inventor, which was written specifically with him in mind. Though it is a small role, it is vital to Edward's backstory. We see that the Inventor was a kind and caring man who sought to complete Edward before dying unexpectedly.

Ian McKellen would be the perfect fit for the role of a charming elderly man with a paternal instinct. He also has that regal and sophisticated quality that Price brought to the performance.

9 Helen - Leslie Jones

One of the most intriguing aspects of the movie is its depiction of the suburban community. From the similar-looking houses to the perfectly manicured lawns, the setting has a strange surreal feel to it. And the neighbors provide a lot of entertainment with their immediate fascination with Edward.

Two and a Half Men star Conchata Ferrell starred as Helen, one of the nosy neighbors with a bit of a rough edge to her. Leslie Jones of Saturday Night Live fame would be a standout in such a role as she is a larger-than-life personality who can play to no-nonsense types perfectly.

8 Esmeralda - Kate McKinnon

Another one of the cooky neighbors in the story is Esmeralda. While the other women in the community are busy gossiping and worrying about their appearances, Esmeralda is a deeply religious person who immediately thinks Edward is evil and attempts to warn the other about him.

Another SNL standout, Kate McKinnon would be hilarious in this role. She excels at those quirky, off-the-wall characters. She would definitely bring an outlandish quality to the suburban setting.

7 Joyce - Kathryn Hahn

The most prominent of the nosy neighbor characters is Joyce. She is the queen bee of the housewives and is always on the lookout for a new man to seduce. Once Edward arrives, she puts all her attention towards this mysterious young man.

Kathryn Hahn continues to show she has incredible range as an actor, but it is always a thrill to see her play the intense and in-your-face comedic roles. She could really have fun with the over-the-top seductress part.

6 Kevin - Jacob Tremblay

When discovered living alone, Edward is welcomed into the Boggs household. Kevin Boggs is the youngest child in the family, and he has a hard time getting used to Edward. He sees him more of an oddity rather than a person and even brings him in for show-and-tell at school.

One of the best young actors working today is Jacob Tremblay. After having his breakout role in the Oscar-winning drama Room, Tremblay has continued to show off his talent and would be an easy fit for this part.

5 Peg - Leslie Mann

Peg Boggs is the local Avon lady whose door-to-door selling leads her to find Edward living alone in the abandoned castle. Peg is a kind-hearted and maternal person who immediately feels sympathy for Edward and does everything she can to make him feel comfortable in his new life.

Leslie Mann is a hilarious comedic actor who can easily bring out the many funny elements of this character. Mann also has a very sweet and charming nature to her that makes it easy to believe she would care for this unusual man.

4 Bill - Steve Carell

One of the funniest yet most reserved performances in the movie comes from Alan Arkin as Bill Boggs. He is a typical suburban dad who takes a very relaxed approach to everything yet always has some cliché fatherly advice to give out.

Arkin plays the part in a perfect deadpan manner and his frequent co-star Steve Carell seems like a good modern replacement for the role. Carell can play that sort of awkward quiet guy part very well and make any line hilarious.

3 Jim - Joe Keery

Anthony Michael Hall stepped away from his usual geek roles to play the villain of the story. Jim is the bully boyfriend of Kim Boggs who constantly makes fun of Edward. As the story goes on, Jim reveals himself to be a criminal and becomes violently jealous in the end.

Joe Keery is best known for playing Steve Harrington on Stranger Things. Steve initially seemed like he'd be a similar jerk like Jim, but later redeemed himself. It would be exciting to see Keery get a chance to play the full-blown villain and he feels like a good fit for this role.

2 Kim - Anya Taylor-Joy

Another Stranger Things alum, Winona Ryder, gave a great performance in this film as Kim Boggs. Though she is initially scared and embarrassed to have Edward living in their house, Kim soon sees his sweet soul and falls in love with him.

As she has recently been impressing everyone with her incredible performance in The Queen's Gambit, Anya Taylor-Joy feels like a great modern choice to play Kim. She has that girl-next-door vibe, but also seems like someone who could form a bond with a misunderstood creature like Edward.

1 Edward - Timothée Chalamet

Though he was largely known as a heartthrob at the time, Johnny Depp transformed himself for this very unusual yet entirely captivating performance. He does a great job bringing innocence to Edward while also balancing the comedy and tragedy of the role.

Timothee Chalamet is another young actor who is known for taking on complex and challenging roles. Given that Edward speaks very little, Chalamet is the kind of actor who can communicate so much about this character without words.
