Pokémon GO’s Shortened Season 5 Detailed By Niantic Before Launch

Niantic has released the details for Pokémon GO's approaching fifth season. Season 5, which in Niantic's Season 4 blog post was mentioned to be shorter, will run for only three weeks, instead of the usual six. But Niantic has added plenty for trainers to do in the meantime, even though Season 5 seems to be more of a chance for trainers to recollect before Season 6. Season 5 will kick off on November 9th, after the Day of the Dead event on November 1st-2nd.

Seasons in Pokémon GO were introduced in March 2020, and normally run for about six weeks and feature a number of events and rewards. In previous seasons, players improve their rank with a performance-based rating system where players earned or lost points in battles they competed in, depending the opponent and whether they won or lost. In Season 5, however, this has been replaced with a system that calculates rank based on how many battles a player has completed, to reach rank 2, or won, to reach ranks 3-10.

This will also likely be the season that starts off Niantic's promise to change up its selection of Pokémon available to hatch from eggs. Additional changes, according to Pokémon GO Live, include players starting at rank 7 will now have the chance to encounter Legendary Pokémon on the rewards tracks for the duration of the season. Players who finish out the season at rank 7 or higher will now receive an Elite Charged TM in lieu of an Elite Fast TM. Last but not least, there are also three new cups added this season as opposed to the usual one, with various limitations and rewards, and are available for a limited time each.

The aptly-named Little Cup will run from 1:00pm PST Monday, November 9th - 1:00pm PST Monday, November 16th. Only Pokémon that can evolve, but haven't evolved are eligible. The Little Cup has a CP limit of 500. The Kanto Cup will immediately follow, from 1:00pm PST Monday, November 16th - 1:00pm PST Monday, November 23rd. Only Kanto Pokémon with a Pokédex number between #001 and #151 are eligible. The Kanto Cup has a CP limit of 1500. Directly following the Kanto Cup is the Catch Cup, which runs from 1:00pm PST Monday, November 23rd to 1:00pm PST Monday, November 30th. Only Pokémon caught since the start of Season 5 will be eligible, with the exception of Mythical Pokémon. The CP limit for the Catch Cup is 1500.

Attack moves are getting an update as well. Incinerate will be added to Rapidash discovered in the Kanto region, Darmanitan originally discovered in the Unova region, Typhlosion, Ho-Oh,  and Chandelure. Flame Charge will now be teachable to Rapidash originally discovered in the Kanto region, Entei, Emboar, and Chandelure. Lastly, Poison Sting has been updated to generate more energy and allow Pokémon to use their Charged Attacks more often.

There are few things that haven't changed in Season 5, ostensibly because it's much shorter than usual, likely owing to the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield: The Crown Tundra DLC and the upcoming holiday season. The Pikachu Libre avatar items will remain as rank 7 rewards, and Pikachu Libre can still be encountered during random encounters after league battles. End-of-season rewards will stay largely the same, with Stardust for players at rank 1-3, and Stardust, TMs, and a Premium Battle Pass for players rank 4-10. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the walking requirement is still turned off, and players who are Good Friends can continue to battle remotely.
