Harry Potter: What Subjects Would Hogwarts Professors Teach In Regular School?

There are many gaps in logic throughout the entire wizarding world of Harry Potter. However, one of the questions that has been raised multiple times revolves around the trajectory of the magical children's education after they turn 11 years old.

It's well-established that once magical kids turn 11, they're offered admittance to Hogwarts. Yet, what becomes of their elementary studies beforehand? Not everyone is a Weasley, after all. Some Hogwarts students cut short their math, history, and general education and never revisit it, favoring magical subjects instead. In an ideal world, these Hogwarts professors would be able to deftly move between magical and Muggle subjects.

10 Hagrid: Biology

The first impression of Hagrid is that he'd be an excellent professor for some sort of trade school. Yet, he frequently proves himself to be acutely aware of the science of animals. He could definitely teach biology and focus on life sciences.

Under the tutelage of Hagrid, students would be able to learn all about animals and their habitats, diets, qualities, and more. He would be an excellent professor for connecting the students to the natural world.

9 Lupin: World History

Lupin's pedagogy at Hogwarts is limited to just one year in his Defense Against the Dark Arts position. However, if he taught at a Muggle school, it seems pretty clear that he'd be drawn more to the subject of world history.

Lupin is a studious fellow who is well-versed in the contemporary academia of his time. There is a spirit within him that suggests an interest in archaeology and anthropology, but he'd be drawn mostly to the all-encompassing nature of world history.

8 Lockhart: English Composition

While one would most likely find Gilderoy Lockhart teaching English writing or composition at a real-life, non-magic school, that doesn't necessarily mean he'd be a good teacher or be at all qualified for the job. Fans can't forget that his books were actually plagiarized, and he probably wouldn't know a lot about teaching writing in an English classroom, although he'd very likely pretend.

Lockhart was similarly unqualified for the position he held at Hogwarts, so his teaching in a regular school would mostly be a vanity project.

7 Quirrell: Social Studies

Since Quirrell's teaching is limited to the first book in the Harry Potter series and was described in the book as "a bit of a joke," it would most likely be more at a primary level than some of the advanced topics embraced by the other professors.

Before he was a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, he taught Muggle Studies, so perhaps he would teach social studies. Because of his past teaching experience, Professor Quirrell would be aware of Muggle culture and how Muggles contributed to early civilization and communication. Hopefully, in a Muggle school, he wouldn't attempt to kill any of his students.

6 Trelawney: Art

There is no one-to-one connection between divination and Muggle subjects. However, the Harry Potter audience can still glean a lot about the kind of teacher Professor Trelawney would be in the Muggle world.

Obviously, Professor Trelawney would be everyone's favorite art teacher. She'd be slightly detached and occasionally impersonal, but she would also be very encouraging of student creativity. Her free-spirited nature makes her an obvious art teacher.

5 Slughorn: Chemistry

Professor Slughorn takes over the Potions position once Snape is elevated to the Defense Against the Dark Arts job. Obviously, Potions most strongly parallels the subject of chemistry in the Muggle academic world.

Professor Slughorn would be an excellent teacher of chemistry because of his mastery of chemical mixtures and concoctions. He's also very trustworthy in that he believes students know how to direct their own learning.

4 Sprout: Botany

There are many Hogwarts professors that would excel in different areas of science in the Muggle world. Professor Sprout, the Herbology professor of Hogwarts, is an obvious choice to teach botany to students.

While magical plants aren't quite the same as Muggle plants, there's enough of an overlap for Professor Sprout to get by. In the Muggle world, only Mark Watney could challenge her botany powers.

3 Flitwick: Music

Yes, Professor Flitwick is the Charms professor and the head of the Ravenclaw house. However, it's frequently forgotten that he also directs the school choir in the film versions of the Harry Potter series.

Therefore, Flitwick would be an excellent leader of the music department at any school. The education of the arts always needs more support and with someone as caring and intelligent as Flitwick at the helm, musically-inclined students would never need to fear.

2 McGonagall: English Literature

Professor McGonagall is the kind of professor who seems strict and unforgiving at first, but she quickly reveals herself to be an empathetic and fair professor who truly cares about her students. Few teachers are as qualified as McGonagall.

She really could teach just about anything. Yet, her demeanor seems the most evocative of the world's collection of lovable English teachers. Not to mention, she can unleash alliteration and a turn of phrase with the best of them.

1 Snape: Mathematics

Lastly, Professor Snape is practically the exact inverse of Professor McGonagall. While she is a lovable teacher who would encourage a fondness for reading, he is a detestable professor who would make any student dread his class.

Few subjects are as easy to dread as mathematics is. While there are some who love maths, for many, it can mostly be a drag. While Snape's skills lie in the Potions courses, there's no denying that he would best translate to the maths section of a Muggle school.
