Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Has An Unlikely Cameo By LA Dodgers Player

Assassin's Creed Valhalla will feature the likeness of Dodgers first baseman Cody Bellinger. The athlete is fresh off a landmark World Series win for the LA Dodgers, the first world series victory for the team since 1988. This was a major cause for celebration among both teammates and fans, especially in the COVID-19 era.

The Dodgers don't have much in common with Asssassin's Creed Valhalla, as one is a baseball team and the other is an open-world Viking RPG. Valhalla is a hotly anticipated launch title for the Xbox Series X, and a major title for other consoles. It brings the Assassin's Creed franchise's epic storytelling and dynamic combat to the Viking invasion of England, letting players engage in grand confrontations to claim settlements and land.

But amongst all the features players are looking forward to, like historical legends, ship-based combat, and even the legendary Excalibur, a familiar face can be found in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. A recent ESPN interview discusses the fact that Dodgers athlete Cody Bellinger will be portraying an NPC in the game. According to Bellinger, he will be playing a Viking named Otta Sluggasson, which apparently translates to "power hitter." His character wields a tree trunk, and will appear in the storyline. Bellinger claims "You got to beat me in the challenge to advance to the next place," but also states that "You can't fight me, but Otta Sluggasson would win if there were fighting," which would appear to be two contradictory statements. It remains to be seen exactly what role Sluggasson will play in the game's story.

Bellinger is certainly an unconventional choice of crossover for a game like Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Speculation has flown about real-life figures who might feature in the game, but the likely candidates were always historical figures like Leif Erikson, not modern athletes. Depending on how prominent Sluggasson will be in the game's story, Bellinger could certainly add a touch of star quality to the game, but one wonders how much overlap there is between baseball fans and people who might play Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

There's a lot to look forward to in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Ubisoft has already announced its post-launch plans, including major DLC expansions that will let players invade Paris and fight druids in Ireland. Clearly Ubisoft wants to keep fans enjoying Assassin's Creed Valhalla for years to come. If a cameo from Cody Bellinger will help make that happen, then more power to them. Either way, Assassin's Creed Valhalla is sure to be a game worth watching.
