The Batman Slap Gets Used On Another DC Hero | Screen Rant

Warning: Spoilers for The Question#4

Years of re-sharing and re-imagining have made the Batman slapping Robin meme ridiculously popular. In the latest issue of The Question, the infamous image is recreated within the comic's panels. Readers will be caught offguard but utterly entertained to see the slap in this different format.

The Question is probably one of the last DC comic fans would expect the hilarious meme to pop up in. That isn't the strangest part, however, as The Question is the recipient of the slap. Standing in for Robin in this absurd re-imagining, The Question is slapped by a concerned Tot. The Question #4, by writer Jeff Lemire and artist Denys Cowan, available now, gives the meme a whole new light.

The Batman slap meme first surfaced in 2008 as the My Parents are Dead meme. Seen with Robin saying, "Hey Batman what are your parents getting you for Christ-" Batman responds by shouting "MY PARENTS ARE DEEAAAAAAAD!!!" while slapping his ward. The meme quickly got shared all across the internet, with everyone putting their own spin on it. The image originated in a panel from 1965's Worlds Finest #153 titled The Clash of Cape and Cowl. In the comic, Batman thinks Superman killed his parents. Because of this, Batman is filled with hatred toward Superman and seeks vengeance. Robin confronts him about his obsession, and that is what leads to the slap. The original text from the characters in the comic were "Don't tell me I'm wrong you brat...Proving Superman's guilt is my whole mission in life!" Robin's response to the strike: "Ow! Batman, your grief has obsessed you with this idea of vengeance. I beg you... Give it up!"

The instance in The Question #4 is actually a clever call back to the World's Finest comic as Vic is currently obsessed himself. In fact, his obsession with conspiracy is why his friend Tot slaps him somewhat, reversing the roles of Batman and Robin. Vic is convinced everything is connected, and he has lived his current life before. His friend Tot, however, wants him to live in the present and deal with the problems at hand. The slap is Tot's way of waking up the hero. The similarities of the two panels are uncanny as the background is close to the same color, and the placement of the arm slapping is identical too. The callback to this Batman moment is smart and fun.

The slap meme is still going strong today and shows no signs of slowing down. New funny versions of the meme show up regularly throughout the year. And artists like The Question's Denys Cowan will most likely keep finding creative ways to use it to draw in readers.
