An image of a PlayStation 5 black DualSense controller has reignited alternate color rumors. Rumors of an all-black version of Sony’s next-generation console have been circulating for months, including similar speculation surrounding the PS5’s controller to match. There’s been a lot of debate among fans as to whether or not a black version of the system is going to be real, with members of the community debunking the rumors almost as quickly as others spread them.
As opposed to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, which will support accessories from the Xbox One, Sony’s PlayStation 5 will not support the PS4’s DualShock 4 controllers. However, there have been suggestions from fans that the PS5 should take some inspiration from Xbox and implement similar features from its primary competitor, such as backwards compatibility, which Sony has already confirmed will be applied to PS5.
Twitter user _AlexKyaw tweeted images of a black PS5 DualSense controller that has reignited alternate color rumors. Unlike the official white version of the controller, the black mock-up doesn’t possess a white contrast in the bottom-middle portion of the frame. However, it does provide this contrast with white buttons, keeping the joysticks black. Fans should keep in mind this is not an official image by Sony. Rather, it is an alleged leak from an admittedly "unknown" source.
The PlayStation 5 is one of the sleekest designs Sony has crafted for its consoles in years. The PlayStation 4 is kind of a bulky behemoth masquerading as a smooth box. Not since the PlayStation 2 Slim has the company produced such a sleek, standard console that doesn’t function as a handheld device. The PS5’s white design and slender architecture makes it look like something right out of the future, which many could argue “the future is now.”
The next-gen system’s white design is the first of its kind for Sony’s gaming products in terms of its standard production. The closest PlayStation has come to anything similar was the original Sony PlayStation in the 1990s, which was more of a light gray and uninspired. While many gamers would love to see a black edition of the PlayStation 5 and its accessories, it wouldn’t be anything new in terms of its aesthetic, which could render it unremarkable when history looks back on the history of video game consoles. Its hardware and technological advancements will still tout progress, but it will stand out less among the crowd.
PlayStation 5 is scheduled to release in holiday 2020.
