Google Pixel 4a Battery Life: Capacity, Charging Speed & Times Explained

The Google Pixel 4a has a battery that should last considerably longer than its predecessor, the Pixel 3a. While there are many notable improvements between the two Pixel phones, and the battery is one of them, there are a couple of things to keep in mind regarding the limitations of its charging capabilities.

The Pixel 3a was released as a budget alternative to the flagship Pixel 3, back in 2019. While it was certainly cheaper than its flagship counterpart, its battery capacity was surprisingly greater. That said, the same also applies to the newest addition to the mid-range “a” lineup, as the 4a comes with a battery capacity that's also a lot heftier than its 3a predecessor, as well as the standard Pixel 4. In fact, the Pixel 4a's ample battery life makes the energy capacity of mid-range competitors, such as the iPhone SE, seem meager in comparison.

Google's Pixel 4a specs sheet shows that its latest budget smartphone comes with a huge 3,140 mAh capacity. In sheer battery capacity alone, this is considered the largest among all of the regular non-XL Pixel phones to date. However, due to the Pixel 4a's lower price, compared to the flagship Pixel, it does mean some sacrifices were made. Unlike the full-fledged Google Pixel 4, the mid-range Pixel 4a doesn't come with any wireless-charging functionality whatsoever. Although even without having Qi-certified wireless charging, the 4a can still charge just as fast with the included USB Type-C cable and the 18-watt quick-charge power brick. Since Google basically shipped the same set of charging peripherals found in last year's 3a model, the same 15-minute charge results in around seven hours of playtime.

Just like the Pixel 4a, both the Pixel 3a and the flagship Pixel 4 were marketed to last 'all day.' However, the Pixel 3a came with a slightly lesser 3,000 mAh battery, and the flagship Pixel 4 featured an even smaller 2,800 mAh battery capacity. The Pixel 4a's adaptive battery feature also helps to ensure a longer-lasting experience by lessening the power consumption of dormant apps. While adaptive battery is not exclusive to the Pixel 4a, when coupled with the greater battery capacity, the Pixel 4a is likely to last longer

The Pixel 4a's battery still lags behind its XL counterparts, as the 3 XL, 2 XL, and even the original Pixel XL, still hold juicier batteries, coming at 3,430 mAh, 3,520 mAh and 3,450 mAh, respectively. Overall, the Pixel 4 XL's massive (comparatively speaking) 3,700 mAh battery still holds the crown for the greatest capacity among all of the Pixel phones. Of course, having the best battery size in all of the regular Google smartphones is just one of the Pixel 4a's many surprises, with some notable changes in the camera department as well.
