Evil Genius 2: World Domination has been delayed to 2021 due to complications stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The game was first announced in 2017 as a sequel to the original Evil Genius, a management game from 2004. Evil Genius 2, like its predecessor, tasks players with building and managing a secret villain lair straight out of an over-the-top James Bond film and preventing it from getting infiltrated by secret agents.
The COVID-19 crisis has drastically changed nearly every aspect of modern society, and the entertainment industry is no exception. Sports seasons and gaming conventions have been cancelled, talk shows have been moved to Animal Crossing, and numerous video game projects have been delayed as development teams struggle to adjust to the new reality of their work. Nintendo seems to have been hit especially hard; the iconic developer has been spending the year trickling out partner projects and indie games, and remaining mostly quiet on any of its biggest franchises.
In a recent Twitter statement, Evil Genius 2 developer Rebellion regretfully informed fans that the upcoming game would have to be delayed from its initially planned release by the end of this year. Rebellion mentioned the impact of the pandemic as a major factor in the delay, citing the difficulty the developers had in moving from their offices to their homes and their struggles to keep the workflow moving in their new environment. The new release date for Evil Genius 2 is expected to come in the first half of 2021, and while an exact date was not provided, Rebellion tells fans to expect it sooner rather than later. The developer's regret is evident throughout its message. Rebellion is clearly cognizant of how much of a disappointment the delay of Evil Genius 2 is going to be for fans of the franchise, and it's easy to tell how hard the decision was. Rebellion says it's not intent on leaving its fans in the dark, though, promising constant new updates and even a closed beta to be announced at a later date. The team clearly wants to deliver as exceptional of a project as possible.
Game delays are always bad news for excited gamers, but they're generally a very necessary disappointment. It's better to release a finished game late than it is to release an unfinished game on time, and luckily, a lot of video game fans seem to have recognized that. A lot of people are going to be put out by Rebellion's decision to delay Evil Genius 2: World Domination, but hopefully that extra time will result in a better game for everybody.
