Zelda-Inspired Genshin Impact Gets PC Release Window, PS4 Beta

Upcoming open world RPG Genshin Impact has received a launch window for this year on PC and mobile platforms, with a PlayStation 4 closed beta coming later this month. Fans have drawn a lot of comparisons between Genshin Impact and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, particularly for its art style.

The similarities between Genshin Impact and Breath of the Wild are more than just cosmetic, and some players have gone to great lengths to show their displeasure with them. When Sony appeared at the ChinaJoy press conference last year to promote the game, one attendee showed up with their PS4 Pro and smashed it to the ground in protest. Genshin Impact’s first trailer revealed that it does borrow heavily from Breath of the Wild, featuring similar gliding and climbing mechanics, elemental arrows, and enemies that would look right at home in Hyrule, on top of the obvious visual inspiration.

Disgruntled Zelda fans aside, Genshin Impact has captured the attention of a lot of players eager to give it a shot, both in China where its developer is based and internationally. That wait won’t be much longer for some players, as developer Mihoyo has announced that Genshin Impact will launch on PC, Android, and iOS before October of this year. It seems that PS4 players will have to wait a little longer before getting the full game, but some players will get their hands on a preview much sooner. Mihoyo says that it’s holding a closed beta test for the PS4 version of Genshin Impact “to provide all Travelers with a smoother, high-quality Genshin Impact experience.” The closed beta will be held on July 30th and only closed beta players from North and South America are eligible to participate.

Despite its obvious debt to Breath of the Wild, Genshin Impact is shaping up to be much more than just a clone. Genshin Impact will be free to play and feature several different character classes. It will also have optional online co-op, but it’s not an MMO. Mihoyo says that online play will be cross-platform but it hasn’t revealed whether progress will carry over for players who have multiple versions.

Genshin Impact’s similarities to Breath of the Wild might make it easy to dismiss, but footage from previous beta tests shows there’s a lot more to this game than just a catchy visual style. If nothing else, getting the chance to play a game that looks a lot like one of Nintendo’s best games on PC and PS4 isn’t entirely a bad thing either.
