Of all the young adult fantasy series to exist, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games are two of the most influential by far. While they have very different plots and settings, they both had a big impact on pop culture and have many fans.
Despite being two very different stories, there are some similarities that can be drawn between them. And, while the characters from Hunger Games aren’t exactly like those from Harry Potter, seeing how they compare to one another is fascinating.
10 Cato: Draco Malfoy
Cato and Draco Malfoy have some similarities in appearance as they are both blonde with pale skin and features. Also, Cato seems a lot like Draco Malfoy in Dracos’ first years at Hogwarts.
They both come from elite places in their respective society, and they both have a lot of meanness in cruelty. However, Draco does get somewhat of a redemption arc while Cato seems eviler.
9 President Coin: Cornelius Fudge
President Coin and Cornelius Fudge both seem at first like overall good leaders who want to look out for people, but this is later revealed to not be the case.
While they have very different personalities as Coin is very strict and intelligent and Fudge is more bumbling, they both end up trying to manipulate to gain more power. They are shown to be less than altruistic as their series goes on.
8 Effie Trinket: Rita Skeeter
Rita Skeeter and Effie Trinket are different in many ways, but they are strikingly similar vibes and appearances. They are both a bit eccentric and over the top in how they talk and dress, and they both have short blonde, curly hairstyles.
However, while both of these characters are somewhat morally grey, Effie does biome a much more sympathetic character than Rita Skeeter.
7 Plutarch Heavensbee: Albus Dumbledore
Picking a counterpart for Dumbledore in the world of Panem was a little difficult because Katniss doesn’t have a mentor figure quite like him. While she does have Haymitch, he isn’t really the same kind of archetype. So, Plutarch makes the most sense because these are both characters that aren’t always what they seem.
They both might have an end goal in mind that is good, but they tend to manipulate others for these purposes and aren’t very upfront. So, while their goals might be admirable, some of their actions are easy to criticize.
6 Cinna: Remus Lupin
Cinna is a fan-favorite character, and so is Remus Lupin. While they don’t have a ton of similarities, the way that they act as mentors for the protagonists of the series is quite similar.
Both China and Lupin are figures that Katniss and Harry can trust respectively, and they both find a lot of comfort in the advice these mentors give. And, in the end, they both meet rather tragic deaths at a young age.
5 President Snow: Lord Voldemort
President Snow and Lord Voldemort are the main antagonists of these series, so they share this in common. However, while Snow is much more sneaky and seemingly diplomatic in his ways of evil, Voldemrot is more over the top.
But, they are both the looming evil figures in the books that need to be defeated in the end by the protagonist even if Hunger Games does flip this script on its head somewhat.
4 Haymitch Abernathy: Sirius Black
Haymitch and Sirius are counterparts because they have some strikingly similar personality traits. Both of these characters can be a bit cynical, arrogant, and judgemental, but they are both mentor figures.
They aren’t necessarily always the greatest mentors, but they do care for the protagonist despite this. Plus, they both have histories of trauma that inform how they act in the story.
3 Gale Hawthorne: Ron Weasley
Trying to match up the trio with their Hunger Games counterpart was a bit difficult seeing as how these trios function very differently.
Ron and Gale have very different personalities as Gale is very serious and straightforward and Ron is more comedic and relaxed. However, they can both be rather obtuse with how they handle emotions and can let their anger get the better of them.
2 Peeta Mellark: Hermione Granger
Peeta and Hermione also have many differences in the story. For one thing, Peeta is the main love interest to the protagonist while Hermione is not.
Also, Hermione is seen as much more intellectual than Peeta who is more of an artist. But, they are similar in the fact that they both are one of the most important people in the protagonist's lives and because they are rather compassionate and caring individuals.
1 Katniss Everdeen: Harry Potter
Katniss and Hary function very similarly in the story because they are both the protagonists who get swept up into the story and are then expected to carry a mission through to save the world.
They are both characters who worry a lot about the others around them and who want to fight back against the evil forces around them.
