Not everyone wants to stock shelves in a retail store but after watching Superstore, it does seem like it would be fun to spend time with such a fun cast of characters. From hilarious Mateo (Nico Santos) and Cheyenne (Nichole Bloom) to pretentious Jonah (Ben Feldman) and tough Dina (Lauren Ash), every Cloud 9 employee has a personality that seriously stands out.
Since the sitcom takes place in the same location, it makes sense that every episode since the pilot has maintained many of the same characters who behave in similar ways. But there are some other things about the show that are totally different now.
10 Changed: Amy Is The Store Manager, Not Glenn
Glenn Sturgis (Mark McKinney) always keeps viewers smiling, and when he was the store manager, it was pretty adorable to watch how clueless he was about everything. While he did a great job, his tendency to believe anything that he heard was pretty tough to watch.
Now, Glenn is no longer the manager, and Amy (America Ferrera) has replaced him. She seems to be thriving in her new role, especially since she's thrilled to be making such a high salary.
9 Stayed The Same: The Employees Are Quirky And Not Great At Their Jobs
Superstore characters are weird and quirky, no doubt about it, and that's thankfully something that has stayed the same since the pilot. Fans wouldn't want it any other way.
It's also true that the Cloud 9 employees aren't exactly super smart and they don't do a very good job with what they have on their plates every day. Even simple stocking of products can turn into a huge problem with these characters. In the pilot, Jonah is a really bad new employee, and he doesn't really get better.
8 Changed: Dina And Garrett Have A Casual Relationship
Dina is one of the funniest characters on the sitcom and for a while, it seemed like she could never really care about anyone except herself (not counting her beloved birds). When she and Garrett (Colton Dunn) start sleeping together, it seems like she might actually have feelings for him.
Dina and Garrett's casual relationship is something that happens a bit later on and many fans have always shipped them.
7 Stayed The Same: The Employees And Managers Have To Follow Rigid Rules
The Cloud 9 store is a super corporate environment and that's something that is clear in the pilot and never changes. When Mateo and Jeff (Michael Bunin) fall in love, Jeff realizes that he has to tell the company and that means that Mateo has to be transferred to another store so there isn't a conflict.
When Amy becomes a manager, she also learns the hard way that she has to follow really ridiculous and even silly rules because that's what the people at the top want.
6 Changed: Everyone Knows Mateo Is Undocumented
In season one of the show, Mateo (Nico Santos) is undocumented and it's a big secret that he has been keeping. In fact, he didn't even know the truth about his citizenship until he started working at the Cloud 9 store.
Of course, in the surprising final episode of season four, ICE comes to take Mateo and it's incredibly heartbreaking. By now, the other characters know all about Mateo's situation.
5 Stayed The Same: The Store Has Cheesy Theme Days
The Cloud 9 culture may be stiff but management is always trying to make things a bit more fun for the employees. In season one, the employees have to participate in what's called "Color Wars" and for every holiday or special occasion since, it seems like the characters have to deal with corny theme days that they would rather escape from.
This is something that has remained the same about the show. It wouldn't be Superstore without these theme days.
4 Changed: Cheyenne Is Now Married And Pregnant
Cheyenne is ditzy and she has seen a lot of change since the pilot. Instead of just being a teenager who isn't responsible for anyone except herself, she's a mom to her daughter and she also got married to Bo (Johnny Pemberton). In the pilot, she's expecting her baby, and Bo asks her to marry him, and now fans have seen those changes come to fruition.
It's been interesting to see Cheynne take on these two roles, especially since she hasn't really altered much about herself in the process. There's something about charming about how happy-go-lucky she is.
3 Stayed The Same: The Characters Feel Very Defeated
From the start of Superstore, it feels like most of the characters have low self-esteem and feel very trapped in their lives. Even when Amy gets promoted or another character celebrates good news, it seems like no one can be happy or feel comfortable for very long.
This is another aspect of the show that has stayed the same since the pilot. The gang has simply accepted that they have these crappy, low-paying jobs.
2 Changed: Amy And Jonah Are Together Now
In the pilot, Jonah is the new employee at the Cloud 9 store, and Amy finds herself surprisingly drawn to him. She can't believe that she has feelings for him, especially since she's married at the time.
It was always clear to fans of the sitcom that these two characters would end up together as they flirted all the time and clearly had a connection. Now, the two characters are in a serious relationship, and they seem to really care about one another.
1 Stayed The Same: The Customers Are Still Clueless
One of the funniest parts of Superstore is that every episode has transition scenes where customers are doing really dumb things in the store. This might mean trying to purchase a picture frame that has a deceased employee's photo inside of it or putting raw meat into a shopping cart.
No matter what changes on this sitcom, the customers are still clueless to this day, and that's good news since it's always hilarious.
