Many viewers binge-watched (or cringe-watched) Netflix's Indian Matchmaking. On the show, seven singles look to get married in an arranged setting. One of those lucky singletons is lawyer Aparna Shewakramani, whose feisty personality can't be overlooked. That's why she has become the latest internet sensation! Let's dig a little deeper into her work life and see what kind of lawyer actually is.
The internet is divided over whether to like or hate Aparna. Meme creators have produced a variety of entertaining content that revolves around her antics. Although we know a lot about her personal, family, and romantic life from the show, we want to know more about her work life. Aparna wanted to become a lawyer from the age of seven, but said on the series that she doesn't like her job today. The 34-year-old certainly has guts to say that on a public platform, especially since it's easily accessible by her clients and employers.
How did Aparna end up in a job she hates? Well, she first completed a four-year graduation program in Policy Studies and Anthropology from the prestigious Rice University in Houston, Texas. Then, Aparna went on to receive a degree in law from Vanderbilt University Law School in 2010. She is also a member of the Texas Bar Association and the South Asian Bar Association. According to her LinkedIn profile, Aparna first joined Phelps Dunbar as an attorney after graduation. She worked there for almost 2 years and looked after the company's insurers and their claims. Then, Aparna moved on to work as a counsel for Scientific Organics for three years before starting work with another law firm called Lewis Brisbois. The latest update on the profile states that she worked for Insgroup until October 2019 as a general counsel, but Aparna left this insurance company just after six months. All in all, she has seven years of experience as an attorney. According to her job responsibilities, it looks like she works primarily as an insurance coverage lawyer.
Aparna's designation indicates that she manages legal matters related to insurance laws and insurance regulations. She can be hired in two ways. First, she can represent the insured in case they get sued for anything related to their insurance contract. She can also help insured people determine when an insurance company must pay them a claim.
Aparna's work does sound a little tedious, but it perfectly matches her headstrong personality. On the work front, there is no update on what she has up to since October last year. Maybe she finally decided to give up on being a lawyer and pursue something that really interests her.
All episodes of Indian Matchmaking are now available to stream on Netflix.
