Several real-life singers cameo in the Eurovision Song Contest song-along sequence. The Netflix comedy includes plenty of star power with Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams in the main roles, but it's a group of mid-movie crooners who add some extra intrigue during a playful medley. Directed by David Dobkin, Eurovision Song Contest is indeed based on the titular singing competition that has captivated the world for over 60 years. Ferrell and McAdams portray Iceland natives Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdóttir, respectively, otherwise known as Fire Saga.
When a musical tragedy allows the singing enthusiasts to compete at Eurovision in Edinburgh, Scotland, they come face-to-face with international singers who are seemingly better and certainly more prepared to perform on live TV. Real-life pop star Demi Lovato co-stars as the talented Icelandic singer Katiana Lindsdóttir, and Portugese musician Salvador Sobral - the winner of Eurovision 2017 - makes a brief cameo as a street musician. In addition, Swedish pop star Molly Sandén provides the vocals for McAdams in Eurovision Song Contest on Netflix. Petra Nielsen also contributes to the singing voice of Mita Xenakis (Melissanthi Mahut), and Erik Mjönes provides some harmonizing for Alexander Lemtov (Dan Stevens).
In Eurovision Song Contest, Fire Saga is befriended by Alexander before the big show. The confident Russian invites his new friends to a party, and explains the backstories for various international singers. Alexander points out a Hungarian singer named Lisa Lisa - not to be confused with American pop star from the '80s - and also identifies a Finnish band called The Wonderfour, which is comprised by the members of the real-life English band Anteros. Alexander also identifies Julia J, a fictional character who apparently competed during a season of England's Got Talent. Even real-life Eurovision commentator William Lee Adams makes a cameo in the Netflix movie. Around the 45-minute mark in Eurovision Song Contest, Fire Saga participates in a medley with 10 Eurovision alums.
Swedish singer John Lundvik kicks off the Eurovision Song Contest song-along. In 2019, he competed in his native country's Melodifestivalen, and later placed fifth at Eurovision in Tel Aviv, Israel. Born in London, Lundvik is currently 37 years old and released an EP entitled My Way in 2019. He also co-wrote the 2020 song "Mon alliée (The Best in Me)" for French singer Tom Leeb.
Moldovan performer Anna Odobescu sings with Lundvik in Eurovision Song Contest. She competed in the 2019 competition after winning O melodie pentru Europa with "Stay." Since 2018, Odobescu has also released the singles "Agony" and "Dreaming."
Another Eurovision 2019 competitor, French musician Bilal Hassani initially qualified after participating in Destination Eurovision. In 2018, the magazine Têtu described Hassani as "an icon for French LGBT+ youth." He released his debut album Kingdom the following year, and placed 16th at Eurovision 2019. Hassani recently debuted the single "Fais le vide."
Eurovision Song Contest includes a cameo from Loreen, the winner of Eurovision 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Swedish singer won the big competition with "Euphoria," a song that later reached #1 in her native country. In 2012, Loreen released her debut studio album Heal, and then debuted her sophomore album, Ride, five years later. Atlas, the artist's third album, is scheduled for a 2020 release.
A French singer, Jessy Matador represented his country in Eurovision 2010. He performed the song "Allez Ola Olé" and finished in 12th place. Two years prior to the competition, Matador released his debut album, Afrikan New Style, and has since recorded two more albums, Elektro Soukouss (2010) and Authentik (2013).
In 2009, 23-year-old violinist Alexander Ryback won the Eurovision contest with "Fairytale." He represented Norway, and set a new record by accumulating 387 points. He also competed in the 2018 competition, and has been involved in various facets over the years. Ryback doesn't sing in Eurovision Song Contest, but rather plays his instrument during the song-along. He has released five studio albums since 2009, with the latest being 2015's Trolle og den magiske fela.
Ukrainian singer Jamal also receives a spotlight moment in Eurovision Song Contest on Netflix. In 2016, she represented her country in Eurovision and won with her performance of "1944." The single ultimately reached #7 in Ukraine, and Jamala has since released six other singles that have also made the Top 100 charts. Her music has been featured in several Russian movies over the years, and she has released five studio albums.
Elina Nechayeva performed "La forza" at Eurovision 2018. She represented Estonia and placed eight. Nechayeva is a graduate of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, and reached #1 on her country's charts with the 2019 single "La voce dell'alba." In Eurovision Song Contest, Nechayeva sings part of "Waterloo."
Austrian musician Thomas Neuwirth, aka Conchita Wurst, appears directly after Nechayeva in Eurovision Song Contest on Netflix. The popular drag queen won Eurovision in 2014 with "Rise Like a Phoenix." Wurst identifies as a gay man, and announced that he tested positive for HIV in 2018. His debut album, Conchita, reached #1 on the Austrian charts, along with the sophomore release From Vienna with Love. Wurst's third album, Truth Over Magnitude, debuted in 2019.
Israeli singer Netta Barzilai is the 10th and final big name to make a cameo in the Eurovision Song Contest song-along. In 2018, she won Eurovision with her performance of "Toy," which not only reached #1 in Israel, but also topped the U.S. Dance charts as well. Since then, Netta has earned five more #1 singles, with the latest two ("Ricki Lake" and "Cuckoo") being part of her 2020 EP Goody Bag.
