Constantine Filmmakers Tease Unreleased Alternate Credits Sequence

Keanu ReevesConstantine has an alternate credits sequence that was never released. Fresh off starring in The Matrix trilogy, the next step of Reeves' career saw him join DC. The popular action movie star signed on to play John Constantine in a solo film, which was released in theaters in 2005. Constantine's arrival came just before the modern superhero movie genre expanded and rose to prominence through the use of cinematic universes.

Although Constantine missed out on being part of a larger universe - and the filmmakers didn't even consider adding other DC characters - there is one area where the film was a bit ahead of its time. The 2005 DC film featured a surprise post-credits scene showing Shia LaBeouf's Chas Kramer become an angel. Post-credits scene became wildly popular with superhero movies (and blockbusters in general) following Marvel Studios' continued use of them after 2008's Iron Man. And, it turns out Constantine could've featured a different credits sequence.

Collider hosted a 15th-anniversary panel for Constantine for Comic-Con@Home, which featured Reeves, director Francis Lawrence, and producer Akiva Goldsman. When the post-credits scene was first discussed, Lawrence revealed that the Chas scene was only added during reshoots based on an idea Goldsman had. Near the end of the panel, though, Goldsman revealed that they created an alternate sequence too that has never been released.

Goldsman: Do you remember that alternate credit sequence we built out? Their pasts, all of them when they were together. That never made any of the DVDs or did it?

Lawrence: I don't know. I could look for it. I think I still have those polaroids. Do you remember that Keanu? When I had that little polaroid camera and we spent like two or three days of me shooting polaroids of you guys investigating crime scenes, you and Djimon. Zombies under the Santa Monica Pier and stuff like that.

Neither Goldsman or Lawrence got too specific about how the alternate sequence worked, but it almost sounds like it could've been done similar to The Hangover's credit sequence instead of an actual scene setting up a Constantine sequel or something. These photos apparently would've provided a bit more background on Constantine and Djimon Hounsou's Midnite working together. We now know that part of their past included investigating zombies in Santa Monica, but there's no telling what else they were up to before the movie.

There doesn't appear to be any plans to at the moment to release this never before seen Constantine credits sequence, and no reason was given why this sequence wasn't included in the film. However, Lawrence did tease that he might still have some of the photos taken to make up the sequence. If the director is able to locate them, perhaps he will share them online so fans of Constantine can see what could've been. Or, maybe HBO Max would be able to make the credits sequence available as part of a piece of bonus content.
