Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Gets A Season 2 Renewal From NBC

NBC has given the green light for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist season 2 on the network. The musical dramedy premiered on NBC in early 2020, quickly becoming a hit with audiences and garnering terrific reviews from critics. The series currently sits at a fresh 75 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an impressive 88 percent audience rating as well. The series recently completed its freshman season on the network, delivering an emotional season finale for fans that left them with plenty of unanswered questions heading into season 2.

According to TVLine, NBC has renewed Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist for season 2. Throughout season 1, the show averaged just over a 0.4 demo rating and nearly two million viewers. The show's finale equaled its largest viewership since March and delivered its best rating since the end of February.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist season 1 featured covers of plenty of pop songs, utilized by the series to express how characters, including Jane Levy's titular coder, was feeling. These covers included the hits "If I Can't Have You", "Say My Name", and "True Colors". The show's debut season also featured a heated love triangle between Zoey, her best friend and co-worker Max (Skylar Astin), and another co-worker named Simon (John Clarence Stewart). This led to the debate over whether fans were "Team Simon" or "Team Max".

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist follows a young woman named Zoey (Jane Levy) who, after a blackout during a medical procedure, discovers she can hear people's inner thoughts expressed through song, which she later deems "heart songs". Zoey must navigate her new abilities while dealing with problems at work and at home, using her newfound power to help the people she cares for most and herself as well. The show's first season ran for twelve episodes and has been compared to the CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, due to its musical nature. It's safe to assume Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist season 2 will premiere at some point in 2021.
