When New Pokémon Journeys Episodes Release On Netflix

The first 12 episodes of Pokémon Journeys: The Series are now available on Netflix for U.S. audiences, but fans will have to wait three more months for the next 12 episodes. Pokémon Journeys is the 23rd season of the long-running animated series featuring enthusiastic Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum and his loyal Pikachu. In April 2020, Netflix announced that Pokémon Journeys would premiere exclusively on the streaming service in the United States on June 12.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series introduces a new protagonist, Goh, who shares Ash's dream of catching 'em all but in particular hopes to one day capture a Mew, one of the rarest Pokémon. Goh and Ash team up for new adventures in Pokémon Journeys after bonding over their shared love of Pokémon and grand ambitions as trainers. They are also joined by supporting character Chloe, an old friend of Goh's. The series features a new theme song from the band Walk Off The Earth, called "The Journey Starts Today."

According to the official press release from The Pokémon Company, 12 new episodes of Pokémon Journeys: The Series will release on Netflix every three months for the duration of the season. That means that Pokémon fans should look out for new episodes of the show in mid-September 2020. Pokémon seasons typically consist of 40-50 episodes each, so there should be plenty more adventures to look forward to over the next year.

Many TV shows have been delayed or put on hold as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Pokémon Journeys: The Series was among them. The series went on hiatus in Japan shortly before the Netflix deal was announced, but episodes recently resumed airing and the Netflix release schedule is not expected to be affected by the break. The spread of coronavirus has not been as severe in Japan as it has in the U.S. and other Western countries, and Japanese prime minister Shinzō Abe lifted the national state of emergency in May. For fans of Pokémon and other anime series, this means that there shouldn't be any further delays.

The Pokémon franchise has also been busy in other media, with the latest games in the main series, Pokémon Sword and Shield, selling more than 17 million copies worldwide since their release in November 2019. Last year, the first live-action Pokémon movie Detective Pikachu became the highest-grossing video game movie to date, and a sequel is already in development. Until more news emerges about that project, however, fans can hear that signature "Pika-pika" in Pokémon Journeys on Netflix.
