Wally West, known to many as The Flash, may hold the key to saving the DC Universe during its latest crisis. The DC multiverse is facing its greatest threat, courtesy of the Batman Who Laughs and Perpetua, the original creator of the multiverse. After a battle between the Justice League and Perpetua, the DC Universe has been transformed and corrupted into a dark earth, with much of the multiverse completely destroyed.
On DC's main earth, many heroes either serve the Batman Who Laughs, like Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, and Aquaman, in an effort to keep the peace, or are taken prisoner. Some heroes like Batman are still in hiding and trying to strike down The Batman Who Laughs in an attempt to salvage what's left of their battered world. Heroes like Wonder Woman have been searching for a method of restoring the multiverse to what it once was, and she may have found the answer with one of DC's greatest heroes: Wally West.

Wally West has been through the wringer over the past several years. In the aftermath of Heroes in Crisis, where Wally West murdered several DC Heroes, including Red Arrow, Wally was imprisoned among other supervillains. While incarcerated, Wally was approached by Tempus Fuginaut, a being who prevents intrusions in the multiverse, and offered Wally a chance to save the DC Universe from the Dark Multiverse.
Wally travelled through the multiverse, preventing the Dark Multiverse from seeping into each earth, and he would even find his missing children, Jai and Iris, safe and sound. However, this would be a short lived reunion, as Wally would need to sit upon the Mobius chair, a chair belonging to the New God Metron that grants limitless power and wisdom, in order to stop the Dark Multiverse incursions for good. Though Wally saved the multiverse, and his children were returned home, Wally could not go with them, and he was left to wander the multiverse alone. However, Wally would soon find himself in the position to save the multiverse once again, and his new powers may hold the key.
Wonder Woman, in Dark Knights Death Metal #1, seemingly recognized one of the prisoners that The Batman Who Laughs brought to his prison. When Diana later visited the prisoner, she was able to confirm that Wally West was indeed taken captive by Perpetua and The Batman Who Laughs through unknown means. Wally explains to Diana that the multiverse revolves around two forces: "Connective Energy," energy that binds people (such as the Speed Force), and "Crisis Energy," energy that separates and shatters those bindings. Perpetua had created the multiverse using Crisis energy, and during her imprisonment, had caused further distortion by fueling other Crisis events, causing the multiverse to re-shape itself. Wally West himself, as a result of sitting upon the Mobius chair, also has access to Crisis energy, but only has some energy remaining. Wonder Woman decides that the two of them can find a means of channeling this "Crisis energy," and attempt to undo Perpetua's twisted designs for the multiverse.
This could be Wally's chance at redemption and a way of reclaiming his place as one of DC's greatest heroes. Before the New 52, Wally served as the Flash for several years before the return of Barry Allen. Ever since his return to continuity in DC Rebirth, Wally has struggled to find his place in the world. His wife Linda had forgotten him, and his children Jai and Iris were seemingly lost in the Speed-Force. Though Wally served alongside his friends in the Titans, and alongside his mentor and friend Barry Allen, Wally had feelings of doubt and loneliness. In the aftermath of the Speed-Force being destroyed, and his children seemingly lost, Wally found himself at the Sanctuary, a rehabilitation center where superheroes can receive therapy anonymously. Though this led to Wally's fall from grace, this also led to him receiving his new "crisis" powers, which makes him the DC Universe's best chance at saving the multiverse.
In every major Crisis, a Flash rises up to save the day, starting with Barry Allen in Crisis on Infinite Earths. It's only fitting that, in DC's greatest Crisis yet, that Wally West now has the opportunity to rise up and save the multiverse, like his mentor. Restoring the multiverse to its original state could also offer Wally the chance to reunite with his wife and children, and give the West family a proper send off. However, there is no doubt the road to victory will be difficult, as Perpetua has many minions, and seemingly limitless power herself. However, time and again, Wally West has proven himself under even the most difficult circumstances, whether as Kid Flash or The Flash, and regardless of the terrible things Wally's done, he is still a hero at heart, one that the multiverse needs now more then ever.
